HKSI Paper 1 sittings run monthly - how to pick the right one
Paper 1 is offered monthly at HKSI Institute examination centres in Hong Kong. HKSI publishes the exam dates and the enrolment cut-off for each sitting on its own enrolment pages, and the cut-off falls before the exam date. Pick the month that gives you your study runway plus a spare week.
A monthly cycle is unusually generous for a professional licensing exam. Plenty of qualifications run two or three sittings a year, and missing one costs you a season. Here, missing a sitting costs you about a month, which changes how you should think about booking: the risk of choosing badly is small, and the risk of not choosing at all is large.

Candidates diarise the exam date and forget that enrolment closes earlier. HKSI publishes the current closing date for each sitting on its enrolment page. Go and read it before you build a plan around a particular month, because it is the constraint that actually binds.
Plan backwards, not forwards
Most people pick a sitting by asking when they will be ready. That produces a date somewhere in the comfortable middle distance and it slips. Work the other way.
- Start with the date the licence has to be in place. A start date, a promotion, a client mandate. Something real.
- Subtract the SFC application time. The application follows the exams and is driven by your sponsoring firm's compliance team, not by you.
- Subtract your second paper. Almost everyone needs one alongside Paper 1, and the paper-to-activity mapping tells you which.
- Subtract one spare sitting. Roughly 48.1% of candidates do not pass first time. Planning as if you definitely will is optimism, not scheduling.
- What is left is your study runway. Compare it honestly to the study-time estimates and book the sitting that fits.
That fourth step is the one people skip, and it is the reason so many candidates end up sitting a resit under time pressure they created months earlier.
Is there a better month to sit?
The published monthly pass rates vary a lot, and the temptation to read a pattern into them is strong. Here is what HKSI has published for the sittings in our source.
| Sitting | Published pass rate |
|---|---|
| September 2025 | 56.19% |
| November 2025 | 61.84% |
| February 2026 | 49.96% |
| March 2026 | 47.4% |
| June 2026 | 50% |
| Twelve months to June 2026 (mean) | 51.9% |
November 2025 looks like a good month to have sat. March 2026 looks like a bad one. Do not act on that. HKSI publishes the rate but not the number of candidates, so we cannot tell whether a swing reflects an easier paper, a different mix of candidates, or a small sample moving around. Nobody outside the Institute can. Choosing your sitting month on the basis of last year's rate is astrology with a spreadsheet.
What the table does tell you, usefully, is the spread. A candidate at the standard is not facing a fixed 51.9% coin flip, they are facing a paper whose outcome varies. That is an argument for building margin above 42 of 60 rather than aiming exactly at it. Our pass rate analysis goes into what the figures do and do not support.

Practical scheduling around a job
Two considerations that matter more than the month.
| Factor | Why it matters | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Your firm's busy season | Study time evaporates when the desk gets busy | Book a sitting whose final fortnight falls in a quiet stretch |
| Annual leave | The week before the exam is worth more than any earlier week | Take two or three days immediately before, not the week after |
| Sitting two papers | Doubling up saves a cycle but splits your preparation | Only if you are scoring above the standard on both |
| Public holidays | Hong Kong clusters holidays in ways that help or hurt | Check the calendar against your revision block, not just the exam date |
Book before you are ready
Here is the opinion, and it is the whole point of this page. Book the sitting now, at the month you can defend, before your preparation justifies it. An unbooked exam is not a plan, it is a wish, and Paper 1 punishes wishes because it is a volume problem: sixty-six syllabus headings do not get learned in the fortnight your conscience finally kicks in.
The concession: this advice is genuinely wrong for a small group. If you are starting from no financial background at all and you have a demanding job, booking a sitting six weeks out will produce a rushed, expensive failure rather than useful pressure. Book, but book realistically - pick the month you would pick if you were being honest about your week, then hold it.
If the date stops working
It happens. Illness, a work crisis, or a preparation schedule that simply did not survive contact with reality. Deferral and cancellation run through HKSI under published terms, and the deferral and cancellation page covers how to think about the choice. What you should not do is quietly not attend, which forfeits both the sitting and the HKD 1,800.
When you are ready to book, the registration walkthrough covers what the enrolment form will ask you for.
Common questions
How often is HKSI Paper 1 held?
Monthly, at HKSI Institute examination centres in Hong Kong. That cadence is more forgiving than professional exams with two or three sittings a year, because a missed enrolment deadline costs you roughly a month rather than a season.
Where do I find the HKSI Paper 1 exam dates?
On the HKSI Institute's own enrolment pages, which list the sitting dates and the enrolment cut-off for each one. Those dates are the only ones worth planning around, and the closing date matters more than the exam date.
When does enrolment close for a sitting?
Before the exam date. HKSI publishes the current cut-off, and we deliberately do not print a number of days here because it changes. Check the enrolment page as soon as you have a target month, then work your schedule back from the closing date.
Is any month easier to pass?
There is no evidence for it. Published rates ranged from 47.4% in March 2026 to 61.84% in November 2025, but HKSI does not publish candidate numbers, so nobody can tell whether the swings reflect the paper, the candidates, or sample size. Pick the month that fits your study runway.
How far ahead should I book?
Far enough to give you your study runway plus a spare week, and soon enough that the date starts generating pressure. An unbooked exam slips indefinitely. Book, then build the schedule backwards from the date rather than forwards from today.
