2026 Level II registration costs
For the February 2026 exam window onward, CFA Institute lists a Level II registration fee of USD 1,140 during early registration and USD 1,490 during standard registration. The early rate saves USD 350. These are exam registration fees, not a complete personal budget: applicable local taxes may be added during payment, and travel, lodging, optional preparation products, and any appointment change can add costs.
| Cost item | Amount or treatment |
|---|---|
| Level II early registration, 2026 price schedule | USD 1,140 |
| Level II standard registration, 2026 price schedule | USD 1,490 |
| Savings from early registration | USD 350 |
| Local taxes | Not included in displayed fee; added where applicable |
| Optional CFA Program Practice Pack | USD 299 at the official store price shown |
| Appointment rescheduling within the window | USD 250, subject to current policy and availability |
| Level II Practical Skills Module | Included as a required program module; no separate charge shown |
How the fee changes by registration timing
The 2026 pricing schedule published by CFA Institute gives the same Level II early and standard rates across the 2026 exam windows: USD 1,140 early and USD 1,490 standard. The difference is USD 350, calculated as 1,490 minus 1,140. The registration window matters: paying after the early deadline moves the candidate to the standard rate if standard registration remains open.
Do not carry the 2026 rate automatically into a 2027 window. CFA Institute publishes exam fees and deadlines by exam period, and a future window can have updated prices or conditions. The 2026 official overview states that its fee table takes effect beginning with the February 2026 exam window. For a 2027 sitting, use the price displayed for that specific registration period rather than assuming USD 1,140 or USD 1,490 will remain unchanged.
CFA Program fees are paid in U.S. dollars. Your bank or card issuer may use its own conversion rate or transaction charge if your account is in another currency. The displayed CFA Institute registration amount does not include local taxes where collection is required; the checkout total may therefore exceed the advertised fee.
A budget example for a 2026 candidate
Suppose a Level II candidate registers at the early rate, buys the optional USD 299 Practice Pack, and later pays the USD 250 fee to reschedule the test appointment within the same exam window. The known subtotal is USD 1,140 + USD 299 + USD 250 = USD 1,689, before local taxes, payment charges, travel, or lodging. The Practice Pack is optional, so a candidate who uses the included learning resources and does not reschedule would budget USD 1,140 plus applicable tax and personal expenses.
If the same candidate misses early registration and pays the standard exam fee, the comparable subtotal becomes USD 1,490 + USD 299 + USD 250 = USD 2,039. The standard-rate increase accounts for USD 350 of the difference. The rescheduling fee applies only when an eligible appointment change is made; it is not a routine exam charge, a cancellation refund, or a fee that guarantees a new appointment is available.
For a May 2027 or later registration, do not use this 2026 example as the confirmed price. Make a separate budget using the fee shown for that exam period, then add optional products, taxes, and travel. This separation prevents an older rate from appearing current merely because it was the most recently published rate at the time of planning.
What is included and what is optional
Registration pays for the exam sitting and the program materials made available with that registration under the current offering. The Level II Practical Skills Module is a required part of the program, and CFA Institute lists the Level II module in its store at no charge. You should complete a distinct module at each level; it is required to receive the result.
The official Level II Practice Pack is an optional supplemental product. CFA Institute’s store listing shows USD 299. A candidate should decide whether its additional practice is useful after understanding what comes with standard registration. Do not add the Practice Pack automatically to every budget, and do not mistake a product listing for a mandatory exam fee.
Third-party prep providers, printed materials, tutoring, calculator replacement, and travel are personal choices or logistics rather than CFA Institute registration charges. If you need to travel to a test center, estimate transportation and lodging separately. A remote or international candidate should also allow for payment conversion and tax treatment in their location.
Retake cost and missed exams
A candidate who does not pass and is eligible to retake must register again and pay the applicable fee for the chosen exam window. The price depends on that window’s registration period and published schedule. There is no special “retake” discount stated in the 2026 standard schedule. An early retake registration may cost less than a standard registration if the candidate acts within the early window.
CFA Institute says missed exam fees are nonrefundable, nondeferrable, and nontransferable under its missed-appointment guidance. If an appointment needs to move within the same window, the published rescheduling fee is USD 250 and availability matters. That is different from a paid deferral: CFA Institute announced that paid deferrals end for exam administrations beginning February 2027. Candidates scheduled for those 2027 and later windows should not plan on a paid deferral option.
If a personal or medical emergency affects your ability to sit, review the current emergency deferral policy and documentary requirements. Eligibility depends on the policy, and an emergency request is not a guaranteed refund. A candidate should not assume that a missed appointment can be transferred to a later window.
Registration, appointment, and rescheduling are separate
Paying the exam registration fee reserves eligibility for a particular exam window; it does not itself choose a day and time. After registration, the candidate must schedule an appointment through the testing provider by the scheduling deadline. A later appointment change is a separate operation and may have its own fee. Budgeting and calendar planning should account for these separate steps.
For example, a candidate may complete Level II registration before the standard deadline but still fail to select an appointment by the scheduling deadline. The exam fee and a seat appointment are not interchangeable confirmations. Complete both steps and retain the appointment confirmation. If you need to reschedule, confirm appointment availability before relying on a move.
Scholarships and payment planning
CFA Institute offers scholarship programs, including Access, Student, and Professor scholarships, subject to current eligibility and application rules. Scholarship availability is not a guaranteed discount, and candidates should not defer planning on the assumption that an award will arrive. Review eligibility, application dates, and whether an award applies to the exam window before relying on it in a budget.
A practical payment checklist has four parts: the registration fee for the correct window, any tax shown at checkout, optional learning products, and personal exam-day costs. Add a contingency for rescheduling only if your plan may require it. Keeping these line items separate makes the cost decision clearer and prevents optional products from being confused with program requirements.
A fuller Level II cost estimate
Build a budget around what is mandatory, what is optional, and what depends on personal logistics. For a 2026 early registration, USD 1,140 is the exam fee. If the candidate adds the optional Practice Pack at USD 299, the known subtotal is USD 1,439 before taxes and travel. With standard registration, the corresponding subtotal is USD 1,789. The Level II PSM is required to receive a result but is listed at no extra cost.
A candidate who reschedules an appointment within the window adds USD 250 if a new appointment is available. That creates an early-registration subtotal of USD 1,689 including the Practice Pack and one rescheduling fee, or USD 2,039 at the standard exam rate. These examples do not include taxes, transport, accommodation, payment-provider charges, or optional commercial prep courses. They are estimates of selected published line items, not universal totals.
For an international candidate, separate the USD amount from the home-currency estimate. If the payment card converts USD at an exchange rate of 1.35 local units per dollar, the USD 1,140 base fee converts to 1,539 local units before bank charges or tax. The actual card statement can differ because the conversion date and issuer rate may not match the rate used in a personal budget. Leave a margin rather than treating the conversion as fixed.
Early versus standard: an actual decision
The USD 350 early-registration difference is meaningful, but it should be weighed against readiness and timing. Registering early can reduce the fee if you are eligible, have selected a realistic window, and expect to sit. Paying early simply to “lock in” an exam while uncertain about the Level I result or schedule can increase the chance of losing a nonrefundable payment. Confirm eligibility and preparation timing before committing.
Do not wait beyond an early deadline merely because the standard deadline is later if you have already decided to sit and the 2026 fee applies. Conversely, do not pay for optional products just to make the registration feel complete. First inventory the included curriculum and learning tools, then identify a genuine practice gap. The Practice Pack may be useful for additional official question practice, but it is a choice, not a requirement.
Retake and deferral planning
A retake budget is another full registration line item at the rate available for that future window. If the window is in 2027, price it from the 2027 listing. A candidate should also account for the cost of additional materials or travel if the next appointment is in another city. A previous exam payment does not transfer to the next sitting after a missed appointment under the standard missed-exam rule.
For 2027 exam administrations, paid deferrals are being eliminated. A candidate should budget on the assumption that changing plans may mean forfeiting the paid registration and registering again later, unless a qualifying emergency deferral is approved. This makes realistic scheduling and an emergency cushion more valuable than buying an optional study product without a clear need.
Scholarship funding can change the amount paid by an eligible candidate, but it depends on the scholarship program’s criteria, application timing, and award. It is not a guaranteed discount that every candidate can subtract from a budget. Treat an award as confirmed only after receiving it and understanding which fee it covers.
The 2026 fee schedule is from CFA Institute’s program overview, which states the effective exam window. The dates-and-fees page provides tax, payment, and rescheduling terms; store listings show the optional Practice Pack and Level II PSM.
Common questions
Is there a separate enrollment fee for Level II?
The published 2026 pricing schedule lists Level II registration at USD 1,140 early or USD 1,490 standard. It does not list a separate one-time enrollment charge.
How much is the Level II retake?
A retake requires a new registration at the rate published for the selected exam window. The 2026 schedule does not state a separate discounted retake rate.
Is the Level II Practice Pack included?
The official Practice Pack is an optional USD 299 supplement in the store listing. Check what your exam registration already includes before purchasing.
Will the same fees apply in 2027?
Do not assume so. The 2026 schedule is effective from February 2026; use the published fee for the 2027 window.
