NASCLA Practice Test

Updated 4 min read
Key takeaway

Use NASCLA practice tests to rehearse the open-book task: understand the question, identify the right approved reference, locate the rule, and answer under time pressure.

  • NASCLA's official bookstore describes a timed 115-question single practice exam with a topic score report, plus a free mini-diagnostic and sample questions.
  • Practice scores do not guarantee a live result.

Official options

NASCLA's official bookstore describes a single full-length timed practice exam with 115 questions and a score report organized by topic. It also advertises a complimentary mini-diagnostic and free sample questions in one outline topic. Check the official page for current access, availability and terms before purchase.

The practice product is separate from the live exam and from the physical reference books. You can also use original Sitonce questions to study concepts, but only the current PSI Candidate Information Bulletin controls which references and editions are permitted in the testing room.

Open-book practice

A useful NASCLA practice session includes the books allowed by the current PSI bulletin. Learn each book's contents, index and organization; rehearse locating an answer in the edition you will bring; and follow the bulletin's rules for tabs, highlighting and notes.

Open book does not mean every question should become a lookup. Learn common concepts well enough to answer efficiently, then use references to confirm details you cannot confidently recall. An all-lookup approach is slow. Closed-book-only practice does not rehearse reference navigation.

Blueprint weighting

Practice should reflect the published topic distribution instead of assigning identical time to every category. Procurement and Contracting Requirements, General Requirements, and Site Construction together account for the largest share in the current outline. The smaller trade areas still appear and need review.

Practice routine

  1. Begin with a short untimed set. For each lookup, record the book, topic and search path.
  2. Repeat with a timer. Record whether the delay came from unfamiliar content, choosing the wrong book or navigating slowly.
  3. For missed items, write down the controlling rule and why the distractor seemed plausible.
  4. After targeted review, work a fresh timed full-length set rather than repeating familiar questions until the score rises.
  5. Use the outline and your error log to choose the next study block.

Treat the score as a diagnosis. A high percentage on familiar items can hide weak lookup habits. A low percentage may reflect a knowledge gap, an inefficient reference system or both. Track those causes separately so your next practice session addresses the right problem.

Pass mark and pass rate

PSI publishes an individual passing standard of 81 correct answers out of 115 scored questions. Ten experimental items are also administered. This pass mark is not a cohort pass rate: NASCLA and PSI do not publish the proportion of candidates who pass this exam.

Next step

Use free original practice questions to practise concepts, NASCLA's official bookstore for its timed and diagnostic practice options, and the PSI bulletin to confirm approved references and exam-day rules. A practice result helps plan study; it cannot guarantee a live outcome.

Common questions

Does NASCLA offer an official practice exam?

Yes. NASCLA's official bookstore lists a full-length timed practice test and advertises a free mini-diagnostic and sample questions. Check the page for current availability and terms.

Should I use my books during NASCLA practice?

Yes. Rehearse with the references and editions permitted by the current PSI bulletin, while also learning concepts well enough to avoid unnecessary lookups.

How many questions are on NASCLA's practice test?

The NASCLA bookstore describes its single timed practice exam as 115 questions. This practice product description is separate from the live exam, which administers 125 items, including 115 scored.

Is the NASCLA pass mark a 70 percent pass rate?

No. PSI states a pass mark of 81 correct answers out of 115 scored questions. NASCLA and PSI do not publish a candidate pass rate.

Can a practice score guarantee that I will pass?

No. Practice results show performance on that question set. Use them to identify knowledge and lookup gaps, then review the official outline and bulletin.
