What the transcript is
A record that you passed the NASCLA Accredited Examination, held nationally rather than by any one state.
It is the reason one sitting can support licensure in multiple participating states instead of one exam per state.
The sequence
- Pass the examination
- Identify the state and license classification you want
- Confirm that state participates and accepts the examination for that classification
- Request the transcript be sent to that board
- Complete the board's own application, which will ask for far more than the exam result
Sending it takes a request. What follows is the state's full licensing review: experience, financials, bonding, insurance, business registration and often a state-specific business and law examination. The transcript removes one obstacle out of several.
Fees
Transcript requests may carry a fee, set separately from the exam fee. Confirm the current figure when you request rather than assuming.
Timing
Boards process on their own schedules. Requesting a transcript early in an application rather than late avoids being the thing everyone is waiting on.
Does it expire
The examination result is a permanent record. The one-year window that expires is your approval to test, which is a separate thing and only matters before you pass.
