Short answers

Which books can you bring?

Compiled by the Sitonce editorial team from the PSI Candidate Information Bulletin, NASCLA's own published material and the federal standards named belowUpdated 2 min readFacts verified 4 September 2026
The short answer

The approved references named in the current PSI bulletin, in the editions it specifies. Around two dozen books, covering safety, building code, business and law, and the trades.

The bulletin is the authority, and it names both the titles and the editions.

What is on the list

Around two dozen references, falling into four broad groups.

  • Safety - the OSHA construction standards at 29 CFR 1926
  • Building code - the International Building Code and related documents
  • Business and law - the NASCLA Contractors Guide to Business, Law and Project Management
  • Trade references covering concrete, masonry, carpentry, mechanical and electrical work

Edition matters

The bulletin names specific editions. An older edition states provisions that have since changed, and every page reference in a tabbing guide will be wrong.

A book in the wrong edition may be refused

At the door, on the morning of a five-and-a-half-hour exam you have paid USD 130 to sit. Verify every edition against the current bulletin well beforehand, because it is a fifteen-minute check that prevents an expensive problem.

Where to buy them

From their publishers, or from resellers carrying current editions. NASCLA operates a bookstore and other suppliers exist.

We do not supply them, and no course substitutes for having them.

Which ones matter most

Follow the question counts. The business and law guide and the OSHA standards cover 56 of the 115 scored questions between them.

Tab those two most finely and budget your preparation accordingly.
