Search for how many people sit this test and you will find 34,252 quoted as a candidate count. It is not one. It is the number of subtest administrations, and the difference between it and the number of actual human beings is a factor of more than three.

Where the multiplier comes from

Two things stack. First, the General Knowledge Test is four subtests that are registered, sat and passed separately, so a candidate doing the ordinary thing generates four administrations in a single afternoon. Second, a quarter of all administrations are retakes: 8,717 of the 34,252, taken by 3,760 people.

Four subtests plus a retake habit gets you from 10,120 people to 34,252 sittings. Nothing about that is unusual for a multi-subtest examination. What is unusual is how often the larger number gets published as if it described people.

The same split runs through the whole FTCE program

General Knowledge is 28% of everything Florida administers by sitting and 20% by person. That eight-point gap is the whole point of this page in a single line: General Knowledge generates more sittings per candidate than the average FTCE examination, because it has four subtests where most have one.

Why it matters to you rather than to a statistician

Three practical consequences, and the first is the one people get wrong.

• Budget for sittings, not for a test. The published fee schedule is $32.50 a subtest and $130 for all four. At 3.38 sittings the average candidate is buying more than the full battery, because the retake is a fresh single-subtest registration
• Retaking is the normal path, not the exception. More than a third of candidates come back for at least one subtest. Planning as though you will pass everything once is planning against the data
• A pass rate quoted per administration is not a pass rate per person. The department publishes both first-attempt and best-attempt figures for exactly this reason, and the gap between them is where the retakers live

What we cannot tell you

The report gives totals and shares. It does not break the 10,120 down by route into teaching, by institution, or by how many were sitting for the first time in their careers versus returning after a gap. We would like all three. Anyone quoting a figure for how many Florida education students sit this test each year is going beyond what the department published, and so would we be.

One opinion, since the data invites it. Ten thousand people a year is a small examination. That is worth knowing before you buy anything for it, because a small market attracts thin material, and it is why so much FTCE prep is a repackaged generic study guide with the state name changed.
