The exam asks nothing
You can apply, sit and pass the NASCLA examination without documented experience. The examination is a knowledge test and the application does not gate on a career history.
That surprises people who assume the hard requirement lives with the exam. It does not.
The state asks plenty
Every licensing state sets its own experience requirement, and they differ on all three of the questions that matter.

Passing the exam and then discovering your state wants more documented years than you can produce means a license you cannot collect. The transcript does not expire the way the approval window does, but the wasted sequence is avoidable with one phone call.
Reciprocity does not carry experience
A NASCLA transcript carries the examination result across states. It does not carry your experience approval, your financial statement or your bonding.
Each new state re-runs its own qualification review even though it accepts the exam.
How to find your answer
Go to the licensing board of the state you want to work in and read its requirements for the classification you want. That is the only authoritative source, and NASCLA maintains the list of participating states as a starting point. One phone call.
Prep providers summarize these and the summaries go stale. Boards change requirements without telling anyone selling courses.
