How long is HKSI Paper 1?

Ninety minutes. Sixty questions. Ninety seconds each, and the clock does not care that question 40 is about client money.

Is 90 minutes enough for 60 questions?

For a prepared candidate, comfortably. For an underprepared one, not remotely, and the difference shows up in a specific way.

Paper 1 questions are mostly classification. A short scenario, four options, and the task is to decide which rule or regime applies. If you know it, ninety seconds is generous and you will finish with time in hand. If you half-know it, you will burn three minutes weighing two plausible options, then rush the last stretch. That is how people who understood most of the syllabus still miss 42.

How should you pace it?

The single most useful habit is answering everything on the first pass, even the ones you are unsure about, and flagging rather than lingering. An unanswered question at the buzzer is a guaranteed zero. A guessed one is not.

Does the Chinese version get more time?

No. Both the English and Traditional Chinese versions run 90 minutes for 60 questions at the same 70% pass mark. Reading speed in your chosen language is therefore a real factor in whether the pacing feels tight, which is one of the better arguments for sitting the version your study material is written in.

How long does the whole appointment take?

Longer than 90 minutes, and we are not going to invent a figure for check-in, identification and seating because HKSI sets those procedures and revises them. Plan on arriving well before your slot and read the current examination handbook for the arrival rules rather than turning up on the day with an assumption.

The bit worth actually acting on

Practice at full length. Not twenty questions over lunch, not a chapter quiz. Sixty questions in one uninterrupted 90-minute block, at least twice before your sitting, because the fatigue in the last third is real and it is where careless errors cluster.

Our opinion: time pressure is the most over-blamed and under-prepared-for part of this exam. Candidates say they ran out of time when what actually happened is that they did not know eight rules and spent the whole paper paying interest on that debt. The clock exposes gaps rather than creating them.

The concession: pacing genuinely does cost some well-prepared people marks, particularly candidates reading in their second language. If that is you, the fix is reading practice under the clock rather than more content revision. Time management inside the exam goes into the mechanics.
