Sit all four in one appointment and you leave knowing three-quarters of the answer. That is better than most examinations manage, and it is also exactly the situation in which people misjudge their timeline.
Reading your result
Each multiple choice subtest reports a scaled score, and 200 is the pass. It is not a percentage and not a mark out of a total. The essay reports the summed rater score against a passing total of 6.
There is no combined result and no overall percentage. Passing the General Knowledge Test means holding a pass on all four subtests, so your position is best read as a checklist rather than a score.
A passing score does not expire
This is the quiet advantage of the four-subtest structure and it is worth planning around deliberately. A subtest you pass is banked. You keep it and retake only what you failed.
Which means sitting a subtest you are already strong at, early and on its own for USD 32.50, carries almost no downside. You either bank a permanent pass or learn something useful about your pacing for the cost of a takeaway meal.
How the timings stack against a retake
At least thirty days must have elapsed since the previous administration of a subtest before you retake it. That clock starts on the day you sat, not the day you got the result.
For multiple choice, that is a clean thirty days you can spend fixing the problem. For the essay, about four of those weeks are spent waiting to find out whether there is a problem, so the real gap between sitting and re-sitting the essay is longer in practice than the rule's minimum.
It is the only subtest with a rating lag, so it is the only one that can quietly add a month to your certification date. Sitting it on its own, early, for USD 32.50 turns that lag into something that runs in the background while you work on the other three.
What a result does not give you
- The specific questions you got wrong
- Which items on your version were experimental and did not count
- The raw count that would have cleared a scaled 200 on that version
- Any diagnosis of why you failed, as opposed to that you did
Our opinion, and it is the reason we build full-length mocks rather than score reports: an official result is a verdict and a mock is evidence. If you fail a subtest, the most useful next hour is a full timed paper you can mark yourself, before you spend anything on materials.
The concession is that we cannot see your official score report, and neither can anyone else selling you preparation. Any provider claiming to interpret your specific result is interpreting the same three published facts we are.
