Changing careers into teaching
Anyone may register and sit the General Knowledge Test: no course, no degree, no experience required first. The catch for career changers is that the alternative-score route only accepts GRE results from 1 July 2015 and SAT, ACT and CLT results from 1 March 2016, so older scores do not qualify.
The route into a Florida classroom has one genuinely good piece of news in it, and it is the piece that reaches career changers least. That's worth setting out properly rather than mentioning at the bottom, because it changes what your first move should be.
Nothing stops you sitting it
There is no prerequisite for the General Knowledge Test. No approved course, no degree, no supervised experience. You register, you book an appointment, you sit. If you are still deciding whether teaching is a real plan or a thought you keep having on the drive home, the barrier to finding out is one registration and USD 32.50 for a single subtest.
That is genuinely cheap. It is also the reason the test is a poor way to make the decision, which we come back to.
The cutoff dates that don't reach you
Rule 6A-4.0021(12) lets qualifying GRE, SAT, ACT and CLT scores satisfy the general knowledge requirement subtest by subtest. For a candidate who took the SAT recently this is enormous: one Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score of 560 covers three of the four subtests, and the whole examination can disappear.
Then read the dates. The rule counts GRE administrations conducted on or after 1 July 2015, and SAT, ACT and CLT administrations on or after 1 March 2016. If you sat the SAT before that, your score does not qualify, however good it was and however well you remember it.
| Test | Administered on or after | How likely a career changer holds it |
|---|---|---|
| SAT | 1 March 2016 | Usually not. Most career changers sat it long before |
| ACT | 1 March 2016 | Usually not, for the same reason |
| CLT | 1 March 2016 | Rarely. It is a newer test |
| GRE | 1 July 2015 | This is the one to check. Graduate school is a mid-career thing |
That third column is our judgment rather than data, and we are labeling it as such. The dates are the rule's. The inference about who is likely to be caught by them is ours, and it follows from the simple fact that people sit college admission tests at eighteen and graduate admission tests later.
So the specific thing to go and check tonight is your GRE score report, if you have one. Verbal Reasoning 151 covers English Language Skills and Reading. Quantitative Reasoning 147 covers Mathematics. Analytical Writing at a combined 4 out of 6 covers the essay. All of them are on our page listing every score the rule accepts against this requirement.
What the test is actually made of, from a standing start
- Subtests
- Four, registered and passed separately
- Essay
- One written response, 50 minutes, rated by two people
- English Language Skills
- 30 questions, 40 minutes
- Reading
- 30 questions, 55 minutes
- Mathematics
- 35 questions, 100 minutes, calculator and reference sheet supplied
- 2025 first-attempt pass rates
- 64% essay, 68% English Language Skills, 78% Reading, 71% Mathematics
Nothing on that list is about teaching. It is language conventions, reading comprehension and school mathematics, which is why a career changer with a strong professional record and no education background is not at any structural disadvantage here. The disadvantage, if there is one, is that you last did algebra a long time ago and last wrote 50 minutes of continuous prose by hand even longer ago.
How big a decision you are actually making
In 2025 the department recorded 34,252 General Knowledge subtest administrations from 10,120 unique examinees. Ten thousand people a year statewide. It is a small examination, and by our own arithmetic across the four published first-attempt rates roughly a quarter of them clear all four the first time, with the derivation on the compound first-attempt page.
Sitting this test is a bad way to decide whether to change careers. It is a good way to find out what the examination part of the route will cost you in effort, and those are different questions that people conflate constantly. The test measures none of the things that make teaching hard, and we go through the competency list in full on what the General Knowledge Test does not test.
The question we cannot answer
You want to know what you would earn. It is the first thing anyone leaving one career for another needs, and we hold no salary data for Florida teachers at all. Not a state figure, not a band, not a starting number. Every other page you will find on this topic quotes one, usually without saying where it came from.
We don't publish numbers we can't check against a primary source. The district you would work in publishes a salary schedule, it is a public document, and it is the only figure that would actually apply to you. Go and read that instead of an average.
Common questions
Can you change careers into teaching in Florida without an education degree?
The General Knowledge Test has no prerequisite: no course, no degree and no supervised experience is required before you sit it. Whether your existing degree satisfies the subject area part of the route is a certification question for the Florida Department of Education rather than an examination question.
Will my old SAT score let me skip the FTCE?
Only if the administration was on or after 1 March 2016. The same date applies to ACT and CLT scores, and GRE scores count from 1 July 2015. Most career changers sat the SAT well before that cutoff, so the GRE is usually the score worth checking.
What is the cheapest way to test the water?
A single subtest registration at USD 32.50. The fee schedule prices each subtest the same whether you take one or all four, so there is no penalty for starting with one, and a passing subtest score does not expire.
Which subtest catches career changers out?
The essay had the lowest published first-attempt pass rate in 2025 at 64%, against 68% for English Language Skills, 71% for Mathematics and 78% for Reading. Fifty minutes of continuous writing to a prompt is a skill most professionals have not used in years.
What do Florida teachers earn?
We hold no sourced salary data for Florida teachers, so there is no earnings figure on this site. Districts publish their own salary schedules as public documents, and that figure is specific to you in a way that any statewide average would not be.
