What a mock score is evidence of

Compiled by the Sitonce editorial team from CFP Board sources listed belowUpdated 3 min readFacts verified 1 September 2026
The short answer

A mock percentage is a percentage on that bank. The real exam is pass or fail with no published mark, so no practice score predicts it. Its value is as a trend and a domain diagnostic rather than a forecast.

Candidates treat mock scores as predictions. They are not, and understanding why makes them more useful.

Different quantities

A mock reports the share of questions answered correctly. The real exam reports pass or fail, against a standard CFP Board does not publish.

There is no arithmetic connecting the two, because one of them is a number and the other is a threshold nobody outside CFP Board knows.

Different question pools

Practice banks are generally easier than the live exam. The questions are not psychometrically calibrated, they are often reused, and they cluster on the topics that are easiest to write about.

They also under-represent case studies relative to the real paper, which is the specific way a mock can flatter a candidate who is weak at integration.

The familiarity effect

A candidate scoring 85 per cent on a bank they have worked through twice is largely measuring recall of those questions. The live exam draws different questions from the same rules, and only the rules transfer.

What a mock is genuinely evidence of

  • A trend, across several mocks on fresh material.
  • The domain spread - where the holes are.
  • Whether second-session accuracy is holding.
  • Whether misreading misses are falling.
  • Whether the pacing plan survives contact with a full paper.

All five are more useful than the total, and all five require more than one mock to see.

Why the readiness target is 70 per cent

It is a target against our own bank, not a claim about the real threshold. CFP Board publishes no pass mark, so nobody can honestly state the score required.

The margin covers three unknowns: the real standard, a harder-than-average question draw, and the gap between a practice bank and a live form.

When the score and the feeling disagree

Scoring well and feeling unready: take a fresh mock on unseen questions. If the score holds, book.

Scoring badly and feeling ready: believe the score. Confidence is not evidence, and this direction is the more dangerous of the two.

Common questions

Does a mock score predict the CFP exam result?

No. A mock reports a percentage; the exam reports pass or fail against a standard CFP Board does not publish. There is no arithmetic connecting them.

Why are practice banks easier?

The questions are not psychometrically calibrated, are often reused, cluster on topics that are easy to write about, and under-represent case studies relative to the real paper.

What is a mock actually evidence of?

A trend across several mocks on fresh material, the domain spread, whether second-session accuracy holds, whether misreading misses are falling, and whether the pacing plan works.

Why is the readiness target 70 per cent?

It is a target against our own bank. The margin covers the unpublished real standard, a harder question draw, and the gap between a practice bank and a live form.

What if you score well but feel unready?

Take a fresh mock on unseen questions. If the score holds, book. Scoring badly and feeling ready is the more dangerous direction - believe the score.
