Mock exams and what they are worth
A full-length timed mock on unseen material is the only honest readiness signal available before the day. Its value depends entirely on the material being unseen and the conditions being real.
Everything else you buy teaches. A mock measures, and measurement is what candidates are short of.
Why it matters more here than on most exams
One hundred and seventy questions across case sets, over six hours. Stamina and pacing are examined whether or not anyone calls them that.
You cannot discover how you perform in hour five by doing 20-question quizzes in the evening.
The single most common way candidates waste their mocks is by burning the bank in practice mode first, then sitting a "mock" assembled from items they have already worked. It returns a comfortable score and no information. Ring-fence unseen material from week one.
Conditions or it does not count
- Full length, in one sitting, with the real break structure
- The calculator you will actually take
- No notes, no pausing, no looking anything up
- At the time of day you will sit, if you can
How many
Two. One at roughly three quarters of the way through the plan, to find the gaps while there is still time to repair them, and one near the end to confirm the repair.
A third is usually the wrong purchase. If you have failed two, more mocks are measuring a problem you already know about.
The review is the product
The score is the least useful output. What matters is the breakdown by domain and, for each miss, whether it was knowledge, misreading, or a judgment call between two defensible options.
Those three failures need three different responses, and only the first is fixed by studying more.
Reading the number
CFP Board scores the real exam on a scaled basis and publishes pass rates by window rather than a percentage cut, so a mock percentage is not a prediction. Treat it as a direction of travel and a diagnostic, which is what it is good at.
