What the SHRM-CP tests
SHRM-CP is designed for HR professionals who apply policies and practices in day-to-day work. SHRM describes it as appropriate for operational HR work, including people who work in HR and people who perform HR-related responsibilities as part of a broader role. Its subject matter joins functional knowledge with behavioral judgment. That combination matters: knowing a rule is not enough when the question asks what an HR professional should do first, how to assess a risk, or how to communicate a recommendation.
The certification is awarded by the Society for Human Resource Management, a professional association. It is not a government license and does not authorize someone to practice law, represent an employer before an agency, or make decisions outside their role. The exam is US-centered where employment law and workplace regulation appear, while many management and HR concepts apply across countries. A candidate working outside the United States should separate globally useful HR judgment from US-specific legal knowledge.
SHRM-CP is distinct from SHRM-SCP, the senior-level credential. The CP is a fit for practitioners who carry out policies and programs, support managers, respond to employee issues, and contribute to HR decisions. A senior title alone does not make the SCP the automatic choice; a candidate should compare the credentials' intended work scope and eligibility rules before applying.
Eligibility and experience
There is no required degree, minimum number of years in HR, or mandatory HR job title to apply for the SHRM-CP. SHRM recommends basic HR knowledge or work in an HR role, but this is preparation guidance rather than a formal education or experience gate for the CP. People changing careers can apply. They still need to learn the vocabulary, processes, and decision context that experienced HR staff see at work.
A candidate should ask a different question from ‘Am I allowed to sit?’: ‘Can I reason through an HR situation using the exam's framework?’ For example, a manager who hires staff, handles scheduling, and gives performance feedback may already encounter HR decisions even if HR is not in the job title. That experience is useful, but it does not guarantee knowledge of benefits, employee relations, workforce planning, or US compliance. A new graduate can also apply, but should plan more time to build context and apply concepts to realistic cases.
If your role is already senior and includes strategic leadership, compare SHRM-SCP criteria rather than assuming either credential is a promotion rung. SHRM's handbook governs the application details for each exam window. This guide focuses on SHRM-CP and does not transfer senior-level eligibility statements to it.
Exam format and timing
The exam presents 134 multiple-choice items: 80 knowledge items and 54 situational judgment items. Twenty-four field-test items are unscored, so 110 items are scored by subtraction. Candidates are not told which questions are field-test items. Treat every item as live, and answer each one with care. The item count and testing time refer to different things: there are 220 minutes of testing inside a four-hour appointment, which also includes required screen steps and other administration.
Testing is divided into two separately timed 110-minute sections. Time left at the end of section one does not move to section two. A break is available between sections under the exam procedure, so plan to reset your attention before starting the next timed block. Because the sections are independently timed, practice should include two sustained sessions, not only short question bursts. Learn the Prometric appointment instructions before exam day, especially if you have approved testing accommodations.
Knowledge items ask for HR concepts, terms, or application of functional knowledge. Situational judgment items give a workplace situation and ask you to choose the most effective response. They can test sequencing as much as subject recall. A technically plausible step may be premature if the HR professional has not clarified facts, assessed risk, or spoken with the right people.
Do not assume that every practice resource reproduces SHRM's user interface or question balance. Use original questions to develop reasoning, then check the official handbook for administration details. A text exercise can teach how to evaluate options, but it cannot promise an exact simulation of the secure exam.
The 2026 SHRM BASK
The 2026 SHRM Body of Applied Skills and Knowledge organizes the exam's content into six weighted areas: Leadership, 19%; Business, 17.5%; Interpersonal, 13.5%; People, 19%; Organization, 18%; and Workplace, 13%. These percentages total 100%. Leadership and People are the largest individual areas, but that does not make the others disposable. The Business, Organization, and Workplace areas together represent 48.5% of the stated weighting.
The BASK includes behavioral competencies and HR functional areas. Competencies describe how an HR professional works: for example, using ethical judgment, communicating clearly, building relationships, and understanding the organization. Functional knowledge describes the work HR performs, such as talent acquisition, development, total rewards, employee relations, and risk management. Questions can blend both. A policy answer can be technically accurate and still be weak if it is communicated poorly or ignores organizational impact.
Use the weights to allocate study time, not to predict an exact item count. A percentage applies to the exam blueprint, while field-test items and scoring methods mean a candidate should not convert a domain weight into a guaranteed number of scored questions. Start with a diagnostic inventory: list the work you know well, the topics you have only encountered by name, and the decisions you have never handled. Then give extra practice to weak areas while keeping a recurring review of every domain.
Application, fees, and scheduling
SHRM offers testing windows rather than a single national exam day. For the 2026 to early 2027 cycle, the second window runs from December 1, 2026 through February 15, 2027. Its standard application period ends December 24, 2026. Applying during a window and booking a Prometric appointment are related steps, but the application does not hold a preferred test-center seat for you. Apply early enough to address an application issue and schedule a location and time that work.
For the US SHRM-CP exam, the 2026 handbook lists early-bird pricing of $420 for members and $520 for nonmembers, and standard pricing of $495 for members and $595 for nonmembers. The listed price includes a $50 application fee during early registration or a $125 application fee during standard registration. The membership rate requires active SHRM membership at application. Optional preparation materials, travel, and any provider or change charges are separate. Candidates outside the United States should not assume these US amounts apply to their checkout.
The handbook also sets fees and deadlines for transfers, resets, cancellation, and rescheduling. Those choices have different consequences. A transfer moves an application to another window and carries a SHRM charge; canceling or changing a Prometric appointment follows the vendor's notice periods and fee schedule. Before choosing, write down the exam window, application status, appointment date, and the exact action you need. A person who merely wants a different test-center time may not need the same process as someone moving to a later testing window.
Scoring and results
SHRM reports a scaled score and a pass or fail result. A scaled score is not the same as the percentage of questions answered correctly. The exam includes unscored field-test items, and SHRM does not publish a simple raw-percentage cutoff that candidates can use to calculate a pass from a practice quiz. Do not treat a practice score such as 70% as an official prediction. Use practice performance to find weaknesses and monitor improvement on fresh questions.
If you pass, follow the handbook's instructions for viewing your result and maintaining the credential. The certification is subject to recertification requirements; it does not continue indefinitely without renewal. SHRM's recertification route uses professional development credits or retesting within its stated cycle. If you do not pass, read the score report by competency or content area if supplied, and build the next study plan around the pattern rather than repeating the same materials unchanged.
Passing the exam demonstrates performance against SHRM's certification standard. It does not guarantee a job, promotion, or a particular salary. Employers choose requirements for their own roles, and local law still determines what conduct is lawful in a particular jurisdiction.
How to prepare
Begin with the BASK, not with a stack of disconnected flashcards. Make a six-row tracker for the weighted areas and a separate list of behavioral competencies. For each topic, write what the idea means, when HR uses it, what information is needed before acting, and what risk a careless decision creates. That method builds both recall and judgment. Someone who can define a compensation term but cannot explain how to handle an inequity concern needs applied practice, not another round of memorizing the definition.
Study in cycles. Read a small section of the BASK, close the source, and explain the idea in your own words. Answer fresh questions, then review every option. For a wrong answer, record the reasoning error: missing a legal risk, acting before fact-finding, choosing a solution outside HR's authority, or failing to involve the affected manager. Revisit the question later with the answer hidden. If you recognize the wording and remember the key, change the scenario and test the same principle in a new setting.
Reserve regular time for employment-law concepts that are specific to US practice. Learn the purpose and scope of a rule, who it protects, when it applies, and the kind of HR response it requires. A rote list of statute names is weaker than being able to recognize a risk in a hiring, leave, pay, safety, or employee-relations scenario. When a question turns on missing facts, the strongest first step is often to gather the relevant facts and consult the proper internal resource before promising an outcome.
Practice pacing in both 110-minute sections. On a first pass, answer clear items efficiently and flag only those that require more analysis. For a scenario, identify the issue, the stakeholders, the risk, and the decision asked for. Eliminate options that jump to discipline, promise confidentiality that cannot be kept, or apply a blanket policy without understanding the case. Then choose the option that addresses the immediate issue while preserving a fair and lawful process.
A useful weekly review uses evidence rather than mood. Track accuracy on unseen items, time per item, and the quality of your explanation. If your answer was correct for a lucky reason, mark it for review. If you miss two questions on the same topic for different reasons, separate the knowledge gap from the judgment gap. This prevents a high score on familiar questions from creating false confidence.
For each wrong answer, write a one-line rule that would help on a different case. ‘Do not discipline before reviewing facts’ is too broad if a serious safety risk needs immediate control. A better note might be: ‘Separate temporary protection from the final performance decision; establish what happened before recommending a consequence.’ That rule transfers while leaving room for urgency. Revisit the note with new scenarios so the method does not become another rigid shortcut.
Keep study resources tied to the current BASK. A prior edition may explain a stable idea, but labels and emphasis can change. If a course or book uses a different topic structure, make a crosswalk to the 2026 BASK. That prevents a candidate from finishing a resource and discovering that one current domain received little attention. Use the candidate handbook for logistics and the BASK for content scope.
If you have several months before the testing window, space learning rather than reading the entire body of material at once. If the date is close, prioritize unfamiliar domains and scenario reasoning, then use a timed section to check pacing. Do not sacrifice every domain to perfect one specialty. The exam is broad, and an HR professional's daily work rarely covers all of it.
A worked judgment example
A department manager says a strong employee has become withdrawn after a schedule change. The manager asks HR to issue a written warning for lower output. The employee has not been asked about the change, and the manager has not checked whether the targets or workload changed. A strong HR response is to clarify the performance facts, ask the manager to describe expectations and prior feedback, and speak with the employee through the appropriate process before recommending discipline. HR should also assess whether a protected leave, accommodation, or other legal issue has been raised, without assuming that one exists.
The tempting alternative is to approve the warning immediately because performance has fallen. That treats one report as a complete investigation and may turn a manageable issue into an unfair or inconsistent decision. Another weak choice is to promise the employee absolute secrecy before learning the concern. HR can explain that information will be handled discreetly and shared only as needed, but cannot promise secrecy if the matter requires action. The example illustrates why SHRM-CP questions reward orderly judgment as well as knowledge.
What the credential can and cannot do
The SHRM-CP can provide a shared vocabulary for HR work and a structured way to demonstrate knowledge and judgment. It may support a candidate's professional development or job application, depending on the employer. Its value depends on the role, experience, and market. It is not proof that the holder has handled every HR specialty, nor does it replace supervised experience, local-law expertise, or professional advice when a legal question arises.
Candidates should choose the credential because its work scope fits their goals. If you support people operations, recruiting, employee relations, compensation, or HR administration, the exam's operational orientation is relevant. If you are preparing for senior strategic responsibility, compare the SHRM-SCP. If your goal is employment-law practice, the SHRM-CP is not a legal qualification. These distinctions make the study decision more useful than choosing a credential based only on its name.
Candidates who pass should plan for recertification rather than putting the credential away. SHRM's maintenance system uses professional development credits over a three-year cycle or retesting under the applicable rules. Keep records of learning activities as you complete them and confirm that each activity qualifies before assuming it counts. Recertification is an ongoing professional responsibility, not a new exam fee hidden inside the initial application.
Your first year after passing can also be a useful point to compare the BASK with your actual work. If you rarely use workforce data, seek a project that builds that skill. If you know policy but struggle to advise managers, practice consultation and communication. The certification exam measures a standard at one point in time; maintaining practical competence depends on how you use and develop the knowledge afterward.
Common questions
Do I need an HR degree to take the SHRM-CP?
No. SHRM does not require a specific degree, minimum HR experience, or HR job title for SHRM-CP eligibility. HR knowledge or experience is recommended because it helps with preparation.
How many scored questions are on the SHRM-CP exam?
The exam has 134 items, of which 24 are unscored field-test items. That leaves 110 scored items by subtraction, although candidates cannot identify the field-test items.
How long is the SHRM-CP exam?
There are 220 minutes of testing, divided into two independently timed 110-minute sections. The appointment is a four-hour seat that also includes administrative steps.
Does SHRM-CP qualify me to practice law?
No. It is a professional HR certification, not a government license or legal qualification. The exam includes US employment-law knowledge, but it does not authorize legal practice.
