PMP Eligibility Requirements and 35-Hour Training Rule

Updated 10 min read
Key takeaway

PMP eligibility in 2026 requires a qualifying education credential, 24 to 60 months of non-overlapping project leadership experience from the past 10 years, and 35 hours of training or active CAPM certification.

  • The experience threshold depends on your education path: 60 months after secondary school, 48 after a recognized associate-level qualification, 36 with a bachelor degree, or 24 through an eligible PMI GAC-accredited degree.

Four current education and experience paths

PMI’s July 2026 examination outline sets four education pathways. Each pairs a qualifying education credential with project leadership experience accrued in a professional setting during the 10 years before application. The experience months must not overlap. Each route also requires 35 hours of Project Professional training unless you hold an active CAPM certification, which PMI accepts for this training requirement.

EducationMinimum qualifying experience
Secondary school completion, such as a high school diploma, GED-type equivalent, or upper-secondary certificate60 months (5 years)
Recognized associate-level, higher-certificate, or advanced technical or vocational qualification mapped to the post-secondary short-cycle level48 months (4 years)
Bachelor degree or higher from a recognized institution, or a qualification formally mapped to bachelor-equivalent level36 months (3 years)
Bachelor or postgraduate degree from a PMI Global Accreditation Center (GAC) accredited program24 months (2 years)

How to identify the right education route

Use the qualification level and recognition stated by the awarding institution or appropriate national framework, rather than relying on a credential’s marketing name. A title containing “advanced,” “professional,” or “graduate” does not automatically qualify as bachelor-equivalent. For the second route, PMI calls for a recognized post-secondary qualification mapped to the relevant level. If the certificate does not state its level, the 2026 outline describes evidence such as an entry in a national qualifications register, an official statement from the awarding body or ministry, or a formal evaluation by a recognized national body.

The GAC route is a distinct pathway. It applies to a bachelor or postgraduate degree awarded by a program accredited by PMI’s Global Accreditation Center. Confirm the specific program and degree, not merely that the school has some other accreditation. GAC accreditation does not turn a short course into a degree. If the GAC pathway is not established, use the ordinary education category that fits the credential and its recognized level.

What qualifies as project leadership experience

PMI describes the experience as managing projects in a professional setting and taking responsibility for planning, decisions, delivery, and outcomes. The job title is not decisive. A person called a coordinator may have led project work; someone with “project manager” in a title may have done operational work that does not meet the definition. Your application should make your actual leadership contribution clear enough for a reviewer and verifier to understand.

Experience does not need to come from one employer or one industry. List projects separately and provide their dates and descriptions. Count each calendar month only once when projects overlap. If you led three projects from January through June during the same year, that is six months of elapsed experience, not 18. A project that began before the 10-year window contributes only eligible months within the window. PMI’s experience rule concerns time leading projects, not a simple total of hours across overlapping assignments.

Describe the work through the project’s objective and your actions: how you helped plan, made or coordinated decisions, directed delivery, managed risks or stakeholders, and tracked outcomes. Do not inflate authority. If a sponsor approved budgets or a product owner controlled backlog order, describe how you prepared recommendations or coordinated the decision instead of claiming approval power you did not hold. A verifier should be able to confirm the project and your role.

Worked eligibility examples

Example 1: A candidate has a recognized bachelor degree and 36 non-overlapping months leading professional projects within the prior 10 years. The candidate also has 35 hours of qualifying training. The education, experience, and training elements fit the bachelor route. The candidate still needs PMI application approval and must pass the examination.

Example 2: A candidate has a bachelor degree and 30 months of project leadership experience, plus 10 months on another project that ran during the same calendar period as eight of those months. The total is 32 unique months, not 40. The candidate has not reached the 36-month threshold through those records and needs additional qualifying non-overlapping time before applying on the bachelor pathway.

Example 3: A candidate has a secondary-school credential and led two projects over the same 60-month period. Those projects still account for 60 calendar months, which meets the five-year experience threshold if all months meet PMI’s project and professional-setting criteria. Counting the two projects as 120 months would be incorrect, but it is not necessary to have 120 months.

Example 4: A candidate holds a postgraduate diploma but not a bachelor degree. The word “postgraduate” alone does not prove the award belongs to the GAC degree pathway or that it maps to bachelor-equivalent level. The candidate should establish the credential’s formal level. If it does not meet a shorter route, the candidate may use another qualifying route if its education condition is satisfied.

Example 5: A candidate has a qualifying GAC-accredited bachelor degree and 24 unique months leading projects in the prior 10 years. That meets the experience duration for the GAC path, assuming the program accreditation and remaining application requirements are documented. It does not mean every degree from the same university uses the GAC route; the attended program must be covered.

The 35-hour training requirement

PMI requires 35 hours of Project Professional training. The 2026 certification page lists online on-demand courses, live instructor-led classes, and an active CAPM certification as ways to satisfy the requirement. Training is separate from project experience: a large number of years leading projects does not replace the education requirement unless PMI recognizes the candidate’s route or active CAPM status.

Keep a record showing the training subject, provider, delivery method, dates, and completed hours. If you already completed relevant education or employer training, compare its content and documentation with PMI’s requirements before paying for another course. A marketing phrase such as “PMP eligible” is not a substitute for a completion record. An active CAPM certification fulfills the training condition; do not assume an expired credential does.

A live training rule changes on 1 December 2026

PMI’s announced rule distinguishes when the training is completed and how it is delivered. Training completed before 1 December 2026 remains eligible under the requirements in effect at completion. From 1 December 2026, live classes taught by an instructor, whether in person or online, must be delivered by a PMI Authorized Training Partner, China Registered Education Provider, or eligible accredited higher-education program, including a PMI GAC program. Self-paced courses may come from any organization under PMI’s posted policy.

A virtual classroom with a scheduled instructor is still live instructor-led training. It does not become self-paced merely because the instructor and students meet through a video platform. Conversely, recorded lessons completed independently are generally treated as on-demand. If a course combines recorded lessons with live teaching, determine which hours the provider is claiming and whether the required hours meet the rule that applies on the completion date. Finish and retain evidence before submitting your application.

Application review and audit

The application asks for education, project experience, and training details. PMI may select an application for audit, including requesting verification after certification has been awarded. Maintain records that match the information you submitted: qualification documents, course proof, project dates, descriptions, and contacts who can verify your participation. If your qualification’s level is not obvious, collect the formal mapping evidence before applying.

An audit is a documentation step, not a second eligibility route. If a verifier cannot confirm a project or a credential does not match the claimed category, a short application description will not cure that problem. Keep dates consistent across project records, employment history, and the application. Submit only accurate experience and allow time for the review before making travel plans around an exam date.

A practical eligibility check before applying

First, identify the education category you can document. Second, make a month-by-month project timeline for the previous 10 years and remove overlaps. Third, confirm that each included month reflects professional project leadership rather than routine operations or mere participation. Fourth, verify 35 qualifying training hours or active CAPM status and keep proof. Finally, assemble project verifiers and education evidence so that an audit can be answered without reconstructing records at the last minute.

A candidate who falls short on one path may still qualify on another if the education category and longer experience requirement fit. For example, someone with a recognized vocational award not mapped to the associate-level category may use the secondary-school route if they hold that credential and have 60 qualifying months. Choosing the longer route is preferable to claiming a shorter one that cannot be substantiated.

After PMI approves the application

Once approved, the candidate receives a one-year exam eligibility period under the current handbook. The exam fee is paid before scheduling. Approval does not reserve a testing seat, so select an available appointment with enough time to prepare for the July 2026 exam. PMI permits up to three attempts in the eligibility period; a failed first attempt does not erase eligibility, but later attempts require additional payment. Keep the eligibility deadline in your calendar.

Distinguish projects from ongoing operations

A project is temporary work undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result; ongoing operational duties repeat to sustain the organization. PMI’s requirement concerns leading projects in a professional setting. Examples that may qualify include introducing a new service, building a facility, implementing a system, or delivering a defined product change. Routine ticket handling or recurring monthly reporting does not become project experience simply because it is organized or has a deadline. A program may contain multiple projects, but describe the specific project work and your leadership in it.

Count time using calendar months

Make a timeline rather than adding durations from memory. If Project A ran January through September and Project B ran June through December, the combined elapsed time is 12 months, not 16. If the candidate needs 36 months, they have 12 months from that calendar year, assuming the work meets the project and professional-setting criteria. A gap between projects contributes no time. Projects older than the 10-year window do not count for this application, even if they were substantial.

A role description that demonstrates leadership

A strong entry explains the objective, the candidate’s responsibilities, and the decisions or coordination they led. For example: “Led a customer billing-system migration, coordinated vendor and finance work, managed the release plan and dependencies, reported risks to the sponsor, and oversaw cutover and acceptance.” This describes project work without claiming to have personally approved the budget or owned the vendor contract if those decisions belonged to someone else. Use your own accurate facts, not a borrowed description.

Plan for a credential review before applying

If the category is unclear, resolve it before relying on the shorter path. Ask the awarding body for the qualification level or locate the credential in an official national framework. For a GAC route, confirm the exact program’s accreditation and the degree awarded. A reviewer needs evidence of the claimed category, not simply an explanation that the school is reputable. If evidence supports only a longer pathway, calculate the required months under that route.

Common questions

How many months do I need with a bachelor degree?

Thirty-six non-overlapping months leading projects within the previous 10 years, plus 35 training hours or active CAPM certification.

Can I count two concurrent projects twice?

No. Count each calendar month once, even when you led multiple projects.

Does an active CAPM replace project experience?

No. It satisfies the training requirement, not an experience path.

Which live courses qualify after 1 December 2026?

An ATP, China REP, or eligible accredited academic program. Self-paced training follows a different rule.

Can I apply with 35 hours and no qualifying education?

No. You must meet one education and experience pathway as well as training.
