PMI-ACP Eligibility
PMI-ACP applicants need a secondary diploma or equivalent, 21 formal agile learning hours completed before applying, and one experience route: two recent agile years; one year plus a GAC degree; one year plus a qualifying active third-party certification held over a year; or an active PMP.
- These are the March 2026 outline’s requirements.

The March 2026 PMI-ACP Examination Content Outline (ECO) lists the education, formal learning, and professional agile experience requirements. The experience routes are alternatives. Candidates do not need to satisfy all four. The secondary education and 21 learning hours are shown separately from the experience options, so an active PMP should be read as an experience route rather than a waiver of the learning requirement.
The four experience routes
- Two years of agile experience within the past five years.
- One year of agile experience within the past five years plus a degree from a Global Accreditation Center (GAC) program.
- One year of agile experience within the past five years plus an active third-party agile certification that has been current and held for more than one year.
- An active Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
The route matters because the amount and kind of evidence differ. A candidate using the two-year route should be able to describe recent agile work. A GAC graduate using the reduced-experience route needs the qualifying degree and one year of agile experience. A holder of another agile credential needs a current certification that demonstrates knowledge of agile approaches and principles, and the ECO states it must have been earned more than one year ago. A PMP holder may use the active PMP route listed in the table.
PMI’s outline says current PMI certification holders’ agile and hybrid experience within the past five years can count toward experience requirements and that this experience may be included in the PMI-ACP application. Candidates who already hold a PMI credential should use the application’s recorded history carefully and describe any additional experience truthfully. Do not assume that simply holding a credential makes every other condition disappear.
What qualifies as agile experience?
The ECO describes professional agile experience, not a list of job titles. Agile experience can occur in roles such as product owner, Scrum master, project manager, developer, team lead, coach, or another position on work using agile approaches. The important question is what work you performed and how the team planned, collaborated, delivered increments, received feedback, and adapted. A title alone does not explain that evidence.
For example, a software developer may have worked on a cross-functional team that planned in short cycles, demonstrated working increments, refined a shared backlog, and changed priorities based on customer feedback. That work can be described in terms of agile responsibilities even if the employer called the initiative a product launch. A project coordinator whose work was limited to tracking a fixed schedule and distributing status reports should not relabel that experience as agile merely because a development team used the word ‘sprint.’ The application should describe the candidate’s own responsibilities accurately.
Experience should fall inside the stated recent period for the route that requires experience. If a candidate has three years of agile work over a long career, but only one year in the last five years, the standard two-year route is not satisfied by counting work outside the window. The candidate may qualify through another current route, but the older experience should not be substituted for the required recent period.
Keep a project record that names the organization or initiative, start and end dates, role, and practical agile activities. Think about iteration or flow practices, collaboration with stakeholders, product feedback, quality, impediments, and adaptation. That record helps you prepare an accurate application and respond if PMI requests verification. Avoid claiming a whole project’s experience as your own when your contribution was narrower.
How the one-year alternatives work
The GAC route pairs one year of agile experience with a degree from a GAC-accredited program. It does not say that every project-management or business degree is a GAC degree. Check the program’s accreditation status and keep degree evidence available. The third-party certification route is also specific: the credential must be active, must demonstrate knowledge of agile approaches and principles, and must have been earned more than one year ago. A certificate of course attendance is not automatically an active agile certification.
Suppose a candidate completed a GAC-accredited degree and has 13 months of agile team experience in the last five years. That candidate may use the GAC route, assuming the remaining education and learning conditions are met. A candidate with 13 months of agile experience and a Scrum certification earned 18 months ago may use the third-party route if the certification is still active and meets PMI’s description. If the same certification was earned eight months ago, the more-than-one-year condition is not yet met.
An active PMP appears as its own alternative in the March 2026 table. The table continues to show the diploma and learning columns alongside the experience alternatives. Therefore, an applicant should still document the secondary education and complete the 21 learning hours before applying. The PMP route is especially useful for a practitioner with broad project experience who may not have two years of recent agile experience, but it does not remove the need to study agile-specific material.
The 21-hour agile learning requirement
Applicants need 21 hours of formal training in agile practices, frameworks, and methodologies. The course must be completed before the application is submitted. PMI’s outline says candidates should record the contact hours in the online application and keep proof of completion. It describes relevant subjects such as agile mindset, collaborative team environments, embracing change, knowledge sharing, team-centric leadership, value delivery, and agile metrics.
Choose learning that maps to the current outline and teaches more than exam tricks. Useful training should include practice or experiential exercises, cover relevant concepts, and provide evidence of completion. The ECO describes quality sources as aligning with the outline, including experiential exercises, balancing subject expertise with exam preparation, and providing an end-of-course assessment and completion certificate. Preserve the course title, provider, completion date, hours, and certificate.
The 21 hours are an eligibility prerequisite. They are not PMI’s estimate of the total time needed to prepare for the exam. A course may satisfy the contact-hour requirement and still leave a candidate needing additional study of domain tasks, scenario decisions, and item types. Conversely, independent study can help a candidate prepare but should not be counted as formal contact hours unless the course and provider support that claim.
Training examples
A candidate completes a structured 21-hour agile course with an outline, instructor or guided lessons, exercises, an assessment, and a certificate. The course record supports the formal learning entry. Another candidate watches scattered videos, reads articles, and practices questions over several months but has no documented formal course or contact-hour record. That candidate may have learned useful material, but should not assume those informal activities satisfy the formal training requirement.
If a candidate has two courses that each cover part of the outline, keep both records and add only the eligible instructional hours. Do not count breaks, unrelated modules, or duplicated time twice. The goal is to document actual learning, not to reach 21 by relabeling hours. When a course includes general project management and agile content, count the portions that meet the stated agile subject requirement and that the provider can substantiate.
Put together an eligibility record
- Choose the experience route that matches your evidence.
- Write a timeline showing that the required work falls in the applicable five-year period.
- Collect the secondary diploma or equivalent education record.
- Complete 21 hours of formal agile learning before submitting the application.
- Save course records and certificates, along with credential evidence for a GAC or third-party route if applicable.
- Describe your own responsibilities and the agile practices used in each experience entry.
- Keep supervisor or manager contact information available in case PMI selects the application for audit.
This record also reveals gaps before you pay or schedule. If your experience route depends on an active certificate, check its status and issue date. If the work dates are close to the five-year boundary, calculate them carefully. If you are short on learning hours, finish qualifying training before sending the application. A complete application is easier to support than one assembled under a booking deadline.
Application audits
PMI may select a certification application for audit. The PMI Certification Handbook describes supporting documents that can include education evidence, experience confirmation from supervisors or managers, and training certificates or letters from providers. The handbook gives candidates 90 days to submit requested materials. If selected, you cannot move forward in the certification process until the audit is complete. A successful audit starts the one-year examination eligibility period.
An audit is a verification step, not a reason to change the facts in an application. Keep the original record and use the requested evidence to support it. If a supervisor is no longer available, retain alternative documentation of the work and follow PMI’s audit instructions. Do not wait until an audit notice arrives to locate course completion records or project dates.
Eligibility cases
| Candidate situation | Likely route | What remains to document |
|---|---|---|
| Two recent years on agile teams; high school diploma; 21 course hours | Standard experience route | Recent project dates, actual role, education and course proof |
| One recent agile year plus GAC-accredited degree | GAC route | GAC program degree, recent work evidence, diploma and course proof |
| One recent agile year plus active agile certification earned 18 months ago | Third-party certification route | Certification status and issue date, experience, education and learning |
| Active PMP; 21 hours of agile coursework | PMP route | Active status, secondary education and completed course evidence |
| One recent agile year plus a certificate earned eight months ago | Not yet supported by that certification route | Wait until the one-year holding condition is met or qualify under another route |
These examples apply the March 2026 outline’s stated conditions. They are not a promise that PMI will accept a particular credential or project description without review. The practical step is to match your evidence to the exact route and keep your application precise.
Eligibility is separate from readiness
Meeting the minimum experience and learning conditions says you may apply. It does not mean you have covered every current exam domain or practiced enough to finish the test comfortably. A project professional who used agile methods for years may still need to learn PMI’s current task framing, multiple-response and drag-and-drop interactions, and the Mindset, Leadership, Product, and Delivery weights. The 21 hours establish formal learning; practice and review establish readiness.
After you choose a route, use the outline to identify topics that were not part of your work. A developer may need more practice with product value, stakeholder decisions, or conflict facilitation. A Scrum master may need to review metrics, value delivery, and technical quality. An active PMP holder may need to connect familiar project control concepts to agile flow and team ownership. Target these gaps before scheduling rather than relying on job title or confidence.
Common questions
How many hours of training are required for PMI-ACP?
The March 2026 outline requires 21 hours of formal learning in agile practices, frameworks, and methodologies, completed before you submit the application.
Can I qualify for PMI-ACP with a PMP?
An active PMP is listed as one experience route. The outline separately lists a secondary diploma and 21 hours of formal agile learning.
How much agile experience do I need?
The standard route is two years within the past five years. Alternative routes allow one year with a GAC degree or a qualifying active third-party agile certification, or an active PMP route.
Does any agile certificate count?
No. For the one-year certification route, the credential must be active, demonstrate agile knowledge, and have been earned more than one year ago.
Can I count informal self-study toward 21 hours?
The requirement is formal learning with documented contact hours. Independent reading and practice are useful preparation, but do not automatically establish qualifying training hours.
