Complete the NYLC first
BOLE does not permit NYLE registration until the applicant completes all segments of the New York Law Course. The NYLC contains recorded lectures with embedded questions. Applicants must view each segment in full at normal speed and answer the embedded question correctly before continuing. The system audits viewing time, and skipping or accelerating the lecture can lead to misconduct penalties.
After completing the course, the candidate may register for the next available NYLE through the online BOLE account. Confirm completion appears in the account before the registration window closes. If you completed the NYLC more than one year before sitting for the UBE, BOLE requires repeating both the NYLC and NYLE under its current guidance.
Registration deadline and dates
The NYLE is offered three times each year. The registration deadline is 45 days before the scheduled exam. Exact dates and deadlines are listed on BOLE's Exam Dates page. Do not rely on an old calendar or assume that a particular month repeats the same day each year.
Registration happens through the BOLE account after successful NYLC completion. An applicant needs an account and a completed profile. If you already have a BOLE account, use it rather than creating a duplicate. Keep your email address current because exam-software instructions arrive electronically.
Fees
BOLE's current applicant guide lists no fee for the NYLC and a $29 fee payable to ExamSoft for the NYLE. This is the exam-software fee described by the Board. Other bar-admission expenses, including the UBE, MPRE, education evaluation or application, are separate and are not part of the NYLE charge.
ExamSoft setup
After registration, ExamSoft contacts applicants with instructions to purchase, download and register the required software. Candidates must complete and submit a mock exam to confirm that the software works on the computer they will use. A few days before the NYLE, candidates download the secure exam file. Follow the exact deadline in the BOLE and ExamSoft messages; BOLE states the deadlines cannot be extended.
- Confirm the NYLC shows complete in your BOLE account.
- Check the posted NYLE date and the deadline 45 days before it.
- Register through the existing BOLE account during the available period.
- Pay the ExamSoft fee and install the required software.
- Submit the required mock exam and resolve technical issues early.
- Download the exam file and follow login, connection and upload instructions.
Plan the NYLC and UBE together
BOLE says the NYLC can generally be completed up to one year before or after the first UBE sitting, subject to the application deadline. Completing it more than a year before the UBE requires repeating the NYLC and NYLE. This timing rule matters for students who want to finish every requirement early or take the NYLE before their final UBE administration.
The NYLE is a separate New York admission requirement. Passing it does not replace the UBE, MPRE, pro bono requirement, skills competency or character-and-fitness process. Keep a checklist for each requirement and its own authority and deadline.
If you miss registration
If the 45-day registration deadline passes, plan for a later administration and check that your NYLC completion remains within the one-year timing rule for the first UBE sitting. Do not assume BOLE can waive a deadline. If a technical or account issue prevents registration, contact the Board promptly through its official channels and retain relevant messages.
Complete the prerequisite before the registration cutoff
You must complete the New York Law Course before taking the NYLE. Registration is handled through your BOLE account, and BOLE requires registration at least 45 days before the scheduled administration. Because that is an advance cutoff, first choose a posted NYLE date, then work backward to ensure the course is complete and the registration can be submitted on time.
The NYLE is offered three times each year. The Board posts administration dates and deadlines on its exam-dates page. Use the current listing for your intended attempt; a date pattern from a prior year is not a substitute for the posted schedule. If you miss the registration deadline, plan for a later administration and check that the NYLC completion remains valid for your UBE timeline.
Register through the BOLE account
Use the BOLE account associated with your application and confirm that your NYLC completion appears in the system. Follow the registration instructions for the selected administration and keep the confirmation. If the course status does not update or the portal prevents registration, contact BOLE promptly and retain the messages and timestamps. Do not wait until the final day to diagnose an account issue.
The current NYLE fee information lists a $29 ExamSoft fee; the NYLC itself has no fee. Check the current payment screen and official directions when registering because fee and software instructions are controlled by BOLE and ExamSoft. Budget time for installing the required application and completing its checks, not only for the payment itself.
Plan the NYLC around your UBE date
BOLE's rules limit how the NYLC completion relates to the first UBE sitting. The course generally may be completed up to one year before or after that first sitting, subject to the applicable filing deadline. If it is completed more than one year before the first UBE sitting, both the NYLC and NYLE may need to be repeated. A delayed UBE date can therefore affect an NYLE plan that seemed complete.
For example, a student may complete the NYLC early, pass the NYLE and then postpone the first UBE sitting. Before relying on the earlier completion, compare the dates under the current BOLE rule. A passing NYLE score also has its own validity period. Track both clocks rather than assuming one passing result remains usable indefinitely.
Complete ExamSoft steps before test day
After registration, follow the technical instructions for ExamSoft. Install the software on the computer you intend to use, complete the required mock exam and download the secure exam file by the stated deadlines. Test any permitted network or device conditions and make sure the application launches correctly. The Board states that software deadlines cannot be extended, so treat them as exam requirements.
A successful mock exam is a systems check, not a practice substitute. It verifies that the software and device can run the secure exam environment. Separately prepare the course materials, page index and sequential-answer routine. Keep confirmation of each completed technical step in case you need to resolve a support issue.
If you miss a deadline or fail
If registration has closed, do not assume that the Board will make an exception. Select a later administration, check its deadline and re-evaluate the NYLC-to-UBE timing. If software setup is incomplete, contact the support channel identified in your instructions before the deadline. Keep the issue description factual and include any confirmation or error message.
If you fail the NYLE, prepare to repeat the NYLC as well as the exam. Recheck course status, registration timing and the relationship to your first UBE sitting. Use the prior attempt to identify whether your main weakness was New York doctrine, fast navigation, sequential decisions or time management. A retake plan must coordinate these administrative steps with actual study.
Coordinate registration with accommodations
Candidates requesting nonstandard testing accommodations should read BOLE's separate accommodation instructions and deadlines. A new request and a reapplication for previously approved accommodations may have different filing periods. The NYLE registration deadline does not necessarily control an accommodation application. Start the process early and track the applicable receipt date, supporting documentation and any renewal requirements.
If a disability affects access to written course materials, including a need for a screen reader, contact BOLE about the approved accessible version or accommodation. Do not assume that an accessible format is automatically the same as a searchable exam copy; use the format authorized for the candidate and administration.
Keep separate records for each step
Save the NYLC completion record, NYLE registration confirmation, payment receipt, accommodation determination if applicable, ExamSoft mock confirmation and secure-file instructions. These records answer different questions: course completion establishes the prerequisite, registration establishes entry for an administration, and the software steps establish technical readiness. A single portal status may not capture every task.
Set personal reminders ahead of each official deadline. For example, finish the NYLC before the 45-day cutoff, register as soon as the chosen administration is available, and complete the mock exam before the software deadline. Personal reminders do not change BOLE's cutoff; they create a buffer to solve account or device problems.
When dates or plans change
If the first UBE sitting is postponed, check the NYLC one-year timing rule and the NYLE passing-score validity period. If you fail the NYLE, both the course and exam must be repeated, so calculate the time needed before the next registration deadline. If a technical problem occurs, document the exact step, date and error and contact the appropriate support channel promptly.
