MPRE fee and what registration includes
The MPRE fee is $185 for each 2026 and 2027 administration. Pay it to Pearson when you schedule the appointment. The NCBE account and registration process do not hold a seat by themselves, and starting an application does not complete registration.
The fee includes one score release for your own record and reporting to one jurisdiction you designate during registration. If you omit a jurisdiction or want the score sent to another one after the exam, NCBE Score Services can send additional reports for a separate charge. A jurisdiction receives the score; it still decides whether the score meets its admission threshold and timing rules.
The registration fee and any later rescheduling charge are different. Pearson charges a nonrefundable, nontransferable $25 to move an appointment within the same administration when the request is made at least 48 hours before the first day of that administration. Canceling by that cutoff may qualify for a partial refund. NCBE describes the refund as partial and does not state one universal amount on its registration page, so do not budget around a made-up refund value.
The registration sequence
Registration has linked steps in two accounts. Complete the NCBE account and registration portion first. Pearson then provides an Authorization to Test email. Use that authorization to find an available appointment, select a Pearson testing center, and pay the $185 fee. You are registered only when the NCBE portion, Pearson appointment, and payment are all complete by 11:59 p.m. Central Time on the published deadline.
Step 1: use the correct NCBE account
Create an NCBE Account if you do not already have one. Use your legal name and contact details consistently with your identification and admission records. If you have an existing account, recover it rather than making a duplicate. Keep access to the email address on the account, since authorization and score notices depend on it.
Before selecting an administration, identify the jurisdiction where you plan to seek admission. Check whether it requires the MPRE, its minimum score, score-age rule, and whether it accepts any professional responsibility course alternative. During registration, designate the jurisdiction that should receive your score. If you later want another jurisdiction to receive it, NCBE offers an additional score-report request.
Step 2: decide about accommodations before registration
If you need a test accommodation, apply through NCBE and wait for the determination to appear in your NCBE Account Document Center before beginning exam registration. NCBE will not add accommodations to an existing appointment. Requests can be submitted as late as the registration deadline to be considered for that administration, but applying by the recommended submission date gives more time to receive a decision and secure a suitable appointment.
For an accommodation request, keep the administration’s recommended date and registration deadline separate. For the March 23 or 24, 2027 administration, NCBE recommends submitting by November 19, 2026; the registration deadline is January 21, 2027. A request filed in January is still within the stated consideration window if submitted by the deadline, but it leaves less time for review and the candidate may have fewer location or time options. The deadline is a last date for consideration, not a good planning target.
Once a determination is posted, check the result and decide whether you will appeal or seek reconsideration. If you are not appealing, NCBE directs candidates to complete the registration, authorization, scheduling, and payment steps within 48 hours of the determination. If appealing or seeking reconsideration, wait until that process ends before proceeding. Some accommodations require Pearson appointment arrangements that cannot be completed through ordinary online scheduling.
Step 3: complete NCBE registration and request authorization
Log in to the NCBE account and select MPRE Registration. Complete the registration questions and request authorization to test. This is also where you designate the jurisdiction for score reporting. Review the details before submitting so your selected administration and recipient are correct.
Pearson sends the Authorization to Test email, normally within 24 hours after the request. Check spam or junk mail if it does not appear. If you have approved accommodations, inspect this authorization before scheduling. Every approved accommodation you need must be listed correctly in the authorization because only those accommodations can be attached to the Pearson appointment. Contact NCBE promptly if the authorization is missing an approved condition.
Step 4: book with Pearson and pay
Use the authorization instructions to create or access your Pearson account. Search for an MPRE appointment at an available testing center and time. Not every Pearson center offers the MPRE, and neither a particular location nor an appointment time is guaranteed. The administration dates shown by NCBE are the days on which the exam can be administered; Pearson inventory determines which actual appointment you can book.
Complete scheduling and pay $185 by the deadline. NCBE says these steps should be completed within 48 hours of receiving the Authorization to Test email and no later than the registration deadline. If approved for certain accommodations, the authorization may give alternate instructions or require contacting Pearson rather than booking online.
Step 5: verify both confirmations
After booking and payment, Pearson sends separate appointment and payment confirmations, generally within 48 hours. The appointment message contains the exact date, time, testing center, and any accommodations included in the appointment. Check the appointment against your calendar and verify accommodation details before the exam. If the confirmation does not arrive within 48 hours, NCBE directs candidates to contact Pearson about the appointment or payment.
Save the authorization, appointment confirmation, and receipt. Use the Pearson account for appointment details and permitted changes; use the NCBE account for registration, accommodation decisions, designated score recipient, and eventual score access. Confusing the two accounts can waste time when a deadline is close.
Deadlines and common timing mistakes
The registration deadline applies to the complete process, not simply to opening the NCBE form. By 11:59 p.m. Central Time on that date, you must complete NCBE registration, receive authorization, select a Pearson appointment, and pay. No new registration is accepted after the cutoff for that administration. If a technical or account issue appears near the deadline, there may not be a grace period.
Example: a candidate completes the NCBE portion at 10:45 p.m. Central on the deadline but has not received Pearson authorization or paid. Registration is not complete, and the candidate cannot count on the NCBE form alone to reserve a place. The practical solution is to register earlier, leaving time to receive authorization, locate a seat, and resolve a payment issue.
Another candidate needs accommodations for August 2027. The recommended submission date is April 29, while registration closes June 17. Filing the accommodation request by June 17 meets the published consideration deadline, but it risks leaving too little time to receive the determination and schedule the correct appointment. Applying by the recommended date gives more buffer. An accommodation request and an exam registration are separate processes, and the accommodation determination must come first.
Changing or canceling an appointment
You may reschedule to a different time or center for the same administration if you act at least 48 hours before the first day of the administration and pay Pearson’s $25 rescheduling fee. The date does not move to a different MPRE administration. A candidate registered for March cannot transfer that registration to August or November; a later administration requires a new registration and another $185 fee.
You can cancel at least 48 hours before the first administration day and receive a partial refund. Canceling after the cutoff does not qualify under the normal partial-refund rule. There is no universal refund amount stated on the NCBE page, so treat the $185 as at risk until Pearson confirms the cancellation outcome. Canceling also does not carry your registration to a later date.
If NCBE approves new or additional accommodations after you have scheduled, the existing appointment cannot simply be edited to add them. NCBE says the candidate must cancel, receive the eligible partial refund if within the window, wait for a new authorization that correctly lists the accommodations, schedule again, and pay a new test fee. This is why candidates seeking accommodations should wait for the determination before registering.
Choose a date that works for admission
Do not choose a test date based only on convenience. Compare it with the jurisdiction’s score threshold and score-age rule, the bar exam or admission deadline, your study time, and NCBE’s score reporting timeline. Scores typically appear within five weeks. If the jurisdiction requires a score before a filing or certification date, schedule early enough for the result to arrive and be reported.
Appointment choice is another constraint. If you need a particular city or time, schedule soon after receiving authorization because the desired center may not have a seat. If your nearest center has no appointment, travel may be necessary. The administration dates listed by NCBE do not guarantee that every center operates on both days.
Common questions
