AZ-305 Exam Fees
There is no single worldwide AZ-305 fee.
- Microsoft prices certification exams by country or region, and the delivery provider shows the amount during scheduling.
- Budget for the exam attempt, any paid retake, and AZ-104 separately if you still need the Azure Administrator Associate prerequisite for the expert credential.

How the AZ-305 price is set
Microsoft varies exam prices by country or region. The current AZ-305 fee is shown through the scheduling flow for the candidate’s market. That makes a single dollar amount unreliable for every candidate: the displayed currency and total depend on where the exam is proctored and on the provider’s checkout terms. Use the scheduler’s total for your own appointment when planning the budget.
A price quoted for the United States may not apply in Hong Kong or another market. A currency conversion from a training blog also may not match the provider’s local amount, taxes or payment terms. If you are comparing dates across nearby regions, compare the actual checkout totals and the cost of travel or online delivery requirements, not a converted headline price.
AZ-305 is a Microsoft role-based exam delivered through the provider linked from Microsoft’s certification page. The appointment price applies to the exam booking. It does not automatically include a retake, a commercial course, a practice product, travel to a test center or the separate AZ-104 exam if that certification prerequisite is still missing.
What belongs in a realistic budget
- The AZ-305 exam fee shown for your region and appointment.
- A possible retake, which is a separate paid booking where applicable.
- AZ-104 exam cost if you need Azure Administrator Associate before the expert credential can be awarded.
- Optional books, courses, practice assessments, lab subscriptions or cloud usage you choose to buy.
- Travel and time away from work for an in-person appointment, if applicable.
- A possible rescheduling charge or lost voucher value if you miss the provider’s change deadline.
Separate required expenses from optional preparation. Microsoft Learn documentation and the exam skills guide are available online. A paid course may help with sequencing or explanation, but it is not a registration prerequisite. A lab environment can add value when you need hands-on repetition, but its charge is a preparation choice rather than part of the AZ-305 exam fee.
The exam booking itself does not require a paid membership. Microsoft certification candidates use a Learn profile, and the exam price appears during scheduling. The Azure Solutions Architect Expert certification requires both AZ-305 and Azure Administrator Associate. If you already hold the associate certification, there is no additional AZ-104 exam purchase needed for this credential path. If you do not, budget for that exam separately.
Retakes are separate from the first booking
A failed result does not make a retake free by default. Microsoft’s retake policy states that retakes are paid where applicable. The candidate must book another appointment and pay the displayed amount or use a voucher that explicitly covers the retake. Do not assume a course purchase, first exam voucher or employer reimbursement includes another attempt unless its terms say so.
The wait between attempts affects both cost planning and timing. After a first failure, the next attempt requires a 24-hour wait. After later failures, the wait is 14 days. Microsoft permits a maximum of five attempts in a 12-month period from the first attempt. A qualifying technical disruption may have specific policy treatment, but an ordinary failed score does not automatically receive a no-cost retake.
Plan with an honest retake allowance if the exam fee is a significant expense. That does not mean you should expect to fail or automatically book two attempts. It means the budget and application timeline should still work if the first result is not a pass. Study the score report before paying again so that the next attempt addresses a real gap.
Credential path can add a second exam
AZ-305 is the exam required for Azure Solutions Architect Expert, but Microsoft also requires Azure Administrator Associate as a certification prerequisite. The prerequisite is not required to sit AZ-305. A candidate may take AZ-305 first, yet cannot earn the expert credential until the associate certification requirement is met.
That distinction creates two budget scenarios. A candidate who already holds Azure Administrator Associate generally budgets for the AZ-305 attempt and any optional study costs. A candidate who does not hold it should include the AZ-104 exam fee, study materials and scheduling time as a separate item. The exact cost depends on the candidate’s region and current checkout price for each exam.
For example, imagine a candidate already holds the associate certification and schedules AZ-305 online. Their required exam outlay begins with the AZ-305 amount displayed for that region. If the candidate later fails and retakes, the second booking adds a separate charge. Optional practice material is a further choice. The scenario does not need an invented price to show which components belong in the budget.
A candidate without the prerequisite has a wider plan: AZ-104 preparation and exam, then AZ-305 preparation and exam, plus any retake costs. Taking AZ-305 before AZ-104 can make sense for learning or scheduling reasons, but it does not eliminate the prerequisite. If the candidate’s objective is the Expert credential by a particular date, schedule both requirements with enough time for results and a possible repeat.
Vouchers and employer payment
An employer, school or training partner may provide an exam voucher or reimburse an eligible booking. Treat a voucher as a payment method with conditions, not as a guarantee of a free appointment. Confirm that it covers AZ-305, applies in the selected country, remains valid through the test date and works with the delivery option. Some vouchers may have transfer or expiration restrictions.
If an employer pays, agree in advance on what happens after a failure or missed appointment. A voucher may cover only one attempt. Reimbursement may require a receipt, passing result or manager approval. These are employer rules rather than a Microsoft universal benefit, so include them in your personal budget only after the payer confirms the terms.
A missed appointment can have a different financial result from a failed exam. The provider’s reschedule and cancellation deadlines determine whether a fee or voucher can be recovered. If you need to change the date, complete the change before the stated deadline and save the updated confirmation. A support conversation after a no-show may not restore the exam payment.
Optional preparation costs
Preparation choices range from Microsoft Learn modules and product documentation to books, courses, practice tests and cloud subscriptions. These purchases solve different problems. A course can provide a sequence and explanations; a practice assessment can reveal weak areas; a lab subscription can let you build and troubleshoot configurations. None should be purchased solely because a sales page claims to reproduce secure live exam questions.
Cloud usage charges deserve attention when you practice in a subscription. Creating a VM, database or networking resource can incur costs while it is running or storing data. Set budgets or alerts where available, remove resources when finished and understand that a cloud budget notification does not necessarily stop consumption. A lab course that uses a managed sandbox may have a different fee structure from a personal subscription.
The cheapest resource is not always the least expensive plan overall if it leaves a major skill gap. Conversely, buying several overlapping courses does not guarantee better preparation. Start with the current AZ-305 skills outline, identify tasks you cannot explain or perform, then select resources for those gaps. This keeps optional spending tied to a learning need.
Examples of total-cost planning
Candidate with the prerequisite
A candidate already holds Azure Administrator Associate and uses Microsoft Learn plus a personal lab subscription. The budget contains the AZ-305 registration amount from checkout, any lab or book expense the candidate elects to incur, and a separate reserve for a possible retake. There is no AZ-104 exam line because the prerequisite is already satisfied.
Candidate who still needs AZ-104
A candidate without Azure Administrator Associate wants the Expert credential. The budget includes AZ-104 preparation and exam, AZ-305 preparation and exam, and any retake costs. The order of sitting the two exams does not change the credential rule. A plan that counts only AZ-305 may be sufficient to pass that exam but incomplete for earning the Expert certification.
Candidate using an employer voucher
An employer provides a single AZ-305 voucher. The exam fee may be covered for one eligible booking, but travel, optional study tools, a missed appointment and a later retake may remain personal or require separate approval. Before treating the exam as fully funded, the candidate should know who covers each of those contingencies.
Renewal has a separate cost profile
Azure role-based certifications are renewed through Microsoft’s online renewal assessment during the renewal window. Microsoft describes the renewal assessment as free. That renewal process is separate from the initial AZ-305 booking and any AZ-104 requirement. Keep the certification profile current so the renewal date and eligible assessment appear on the account.
A renewal assessment does not replace a missing prerequisite or convert an AZ-305 pass into the Expert credential. The credential is awarded only when the exam and prerequisite requirements are both satisfied. Renewal maintains an active credential after it has been earned.
Questions to resolve before checkout
- What exact fee and currency does the scheduler show for my location and appointment?
- Does my voucher cover AZ-305, this region, and this delivery method?
- Do I already hold Azure Administrator Associate, or must I budget for AZ-104 too?
- If I need a retake, will I pay personally or does a confirmed employer policy cover it?
- Are study materials, cloud lab usage or travel included in the amount I am comparing?
- What happens to payment or voucher value if I reschedule or miss the appointment?
These questions separate the unavoidable exam purchase from expenses that depend on the candidate’s choices. They also expose the most common planning error: budgeting for one exam when the goal is the Expert credential and the prerequisite is not yet complete.
Common questions
How much does AZ-305 cost?
The price varies by country or region and appears in the official scheduling flow for the selected appointment.
Is AZ-305 included with Microsoft Learn?
No. Learn materials are study resources; the exam is separately scheduled and paid or covered by an eligible voucher.
Is a retake free?
Not by default. Microsoft says retakes are paid where applicable, and a retake requires a separate booking.
Do I have to pay for AZ-104 too?
Only if you still need Azure Administrator Associate to meet the Expert credential prerequisite. AZ-104 is not required to sit AZ-305.
Is there a separate fee to renew?
Microsoft’s role-based certification renewal assessment is free. It is distinct from exam registration.
