SSCP Results and Retake Rules
ISC2 reports SSCP pass or fail immediately after a CAT exam.
- It does not provide passers a numerical scaled score; candidates who fail receive domain proficiency feedback.
- Retakes require 30, 60 or 90 test-free days depending on prior attempts, with a maximum of four attempts per certification program in 12 months.

When and how you receive the result
ISC2 says candidates receive an email with official results after passing, and its CAT FAQ states that candidates receive a pass/fail result immediately after completing the exam. Wait for the official notice and check the email address attached to the account. A test-center experience, appointment ending at 100 items, or the difficulty of the final question is not a substitute for the result.
The pass/fail report does not include a numerical scaled score. If you fail after completing the minimum required items, ISC2 provides domain proficiency feedback to help target preparation. It does not identify exact missed questions or provide a reusable exam transcript. Protect exam content and follow the examination agreement.
A passing result is not yet the SSCP credential
Passing the examination completes the testing milestone, not necessarily the certification process. If you meet the one-year experience requirement, submit the certification application and complete the endorsement and Code of Ethics requirements. An ISC2 certified professional in good standing may endorse the application; ISC2 can act as endorser if you do not know an eligible member. Then pay the first AMF when ISC2 directs you.
If you do not have the required experience, ask ISC2 about the Associate of ISC2 route. An SSCP Associate has two years to earn the one-year experience requirement. Do not represent an exam pass as an active SSCP certification until ISC2 has approved and awarded the credential.
Official SSCP retake waiting periods
ISC2’s policy applies test-free waiting periods between attempts: after the first attempt, wait 30 test-free days; after the second, wait 60 test-free days from the most recent attempt; after the third and later attempts, wait 90 test-free days from the most recent attempt. “Test-free” means no exam attempt during that period. A new registration does not remove the wait.
Candidates may attempt the same ISC2 certification exam up to four times within any 12-month period. Attempt timing and count are tracked per certification program. The retake policy is separate from a particular product’s expiration date. If you bought a package, you must satisfy both the waiting period and the package window.
Single exam purchase versus Peace of Mind
A standard SSCP exam-only purchase allows one attempt and the exam code must be scheduled and administered within 365 days of purchase. ISC2 also offers Peace of Mind Protection with two attempts included at a lower cost than two single exams. For that package, candidates have 180 days from purchase to sit both attempts, and at least a 30-day waiting period applies between attempts.
A 180-day bundle window is not the same as a retake wait. For example, after a first attempt late in the bundle window, the 30 test-free days can leave too little time to sit the included second attempt before expiration. Schedule the first attempt early enough to leave a feasible retake window. Review the current product terms at purchase because an exam with instructor-led training can add separate course access dates.
A sensible retake plan
First, pause long enough to interpret the official feedback without treating it as a complete diagnosis. Mark below-proficiency domains as priority and near-proficiency domains as secondary. Pair this with a personal error log: what did you infer incorrectly, what principle applies, and which fact would change the answer?
Second, revisit the current outline at task level. If Network and Communications Security is weak, identify whether the issue was segmentation, wireless protection, trust, network controls, or protocol choice. If Incident Response and Recovery is weak, practice preservation, containment, eradication and recovery order. Learn why each choice fits rather than memorizing a question bank’s answer letter.
Third, schedule after the policy’s test-free interval and only when the next attempt is allowed within the purchase or voucher window. Set the appointment around a realistic preparation block and verify the local scheduler has availability. If the package deadline is tight, contact ISC2 before it expires; do not assume the deadline will be extended.
Worked calendar example: single purchase
Suppose Jordan purchases a standard exam-only registration on January 10 and takes the first attempt on April 10. If unsuccessful, the 30 test-free-day requirement controls the earliest next attempt, while the 365-day purchase validity continues to be a separate deadline. Jordan should calculate the permitted next date from the official rule, inspect appointment availability, and leave time to study before rebooking. A second failed attempt would trigger the 60-day interval; a third would trigger 90 days.
This example avoids treating the purchase date as the retake clock. The wait follows the exam attempt. The purchase’s validity follows its own start date. If Jordan instead had a Peace of Mind package, the 180-day expiry would require additional planning even though the required first retake wait is only 30 test-free days.
Worked calendar example: all allowed attempts
A candidate who sits four times in a rolling 12-month period has reached the maximum attempts for that certification program in that window. The candidate cannot assume that waiting only for the next 90-day interval makes another attempt available immediately; the four-attempt limit must also be satisfied. Plan from both the previous attempt dates and the moving 12-month period.
Do not purchase a new voucher as a workaround for the exam policy. If a policy interpretation or an exceptional situation is unclear, use ISC2 support and keep the response. An unauthorized attempt can create cost and status complications without improving readiness.
If a result or appointment appears wrong
If the result email does not arrive, sign in to the ISC2 account and check the exam record before buying another seat. Confirm the registered email address and wait for the provider’s result synchronization. For a technical incident, report it through the official support route promptly with the appointment confirmation and factual description. A complaint or incident report does not itself change a score or guarantee another attempt.
If account records show a different exam status from the email, save both records and request clarification from ISC2. Do not post candidate-specific or recalled test items in a forum; exam confidentiality rules continue to apply.
What the proficiency feedback means
ISC2 describes the failing-candidate diagnostic levels as below proficiency, near proficiency and above proficiency. They are relative to the passing standard for each domain. You do not need an above-proficiency result in every domain to pass, because the overall exam is compensatory. A below-proficiency label is a reason to prioritize review, not proof that you missed every item in that subject.
Pair the report with your own notes. If you remember a scenario and know where your reasoning broke, record the concept without copying protected item text. If the domain was unfamiliar, rebuild the underlying objective. If it was a decision error, create a fresh case that changes one key fact and practice the order again.
How to choose the next appointment
Use three conditions before booking: the policy wait has elapsed; your purchase or bundle remains valid; and your preparation plan has addressed the diagnosed gaps. Appointment availability is a fourth practical constraint. A test-center opening after the earliest retake date may require a longer study interval than the published minimum. The wait is the earliest permitted day, not a recommendation to test immediately.
A candidate with one weak domain but stable performance elsewhere can schedule after focused remediation and mixed review. A candidate with multiple below-proficiency areas should allow enough time for systematic rebuilding. Keep the work concrete: outline objective, explanation, new scenario, delayed retrieval. Do not spend the entire interval replaying the same questions.
Policy timeline table
Use the following as planning rules alongside the current ISC2 policy and product conditions. The “test-free” wait begins after the attempt, while the attempt cap is measured over a rolling 12-month period.
Dates, eligibility and help requests
For example, if a candidate’s first attempt is on a Monday, the next attempt is not permitted until 30 test-free days have elapsed. The candidate should calculate from the actual appointment date, then verify the earliest available provider date. Do not treat 30 calendar days as a guarantee that an appointment will be available that day. After the second attempt, the wait is 60 test-free days; after the third, 90.
| Prior attempts | Minimum test-free wait before next attempt |
|---|---|
| After attempt one | 30 days |
| After attempt two | 60 days from most recent attempt |
| After attempt three or later | 90 days from most recent attempt |
| Attempt cap | Up to four attempts in a 12-month period |
The attempt limit and waiting period are independent constraints. A candidate who has made four attempts in the 12-month period must wait until an attempt falls outside the applicable period, even if the 90-day wait has passed. Conversely, a candidate with only one attempt in the period must still complete the 30-day test-free interval. Do not make a purchase until you can satisfy both conditions and the voucher expiry.
