CCSP Results and Retakes
ISC2 gives CCSP candidates an unofficial result at test-center checkout, then emails the official result.
- It reports pass or fail rather than a numeric score; failing candidates receive domain proficiency feedback.
- ISC2 permits up to four attempts in a 12-month period, with 30-, 60- and 90-day test-free waits after successive attempts.
- Certification still requires a separate experience application.

What happens when you finish the CCSP exam
At a Pearson test center, the proctor gives you an unofficial result at checkout. ISC2 later emails the official result and any next-step directions. The report does not provide a numeric score. A passing candidate begins the certification process; a candidate who does not pass receives domain proficiency feedback at the test center. Treat the official email as the record that controls what happens next.
ISC2 analyzes exam score data before releasing results. Depending on the volume of test takers, the organization says release can be delayed by approximately six to eight weeks in some cases. Real-time results may not always be available. This is a possible delay, not the ordinary promised wait for every candidate, so avoid booking travel or making a work commitment that assumes a particular release date.
Results also remain subject to ISC2 psychometric and forensic evaluation. That review can occur after an official result has been sent. If it affects a result, ISC2 says it will notify the candidate. Keep account email current and preserve the official message. Results are not released over the phone.
| What you receive | What it tells you | What it does not provide |
|---|---|---|
| Unofficial test-center result | An initial indication at checkout | A final numeric score or full certification award |
| Official ISC2 email | The official result and instructions for the next step | A raw percentage or item-by-item response history |
| Failing-candidate domain feedback | Which outline areas merit review | The exact questions missed or a domain percentage |
| Possible delayed release | ISC2 may need additional score analysis | A prediction that your result will be pass or fail |
If you pass
Passing the exam establishes that you met the exam standard. CCSP certification has a separate experience and endorsement process. Follow the official email, submit the application with the required endorsement, agree to the ISC2 Code of Ethics and pay the first Annual Maintenance Fee when instructed. The passing result alone does not make you a certified CCSP. The companion certification-requirements article explains the experience evidence and Associate option.
ISC2 requires candidates to complete the certification application within nine months of the exam date. The application cannot be submitted until the passing email arrives. Keep the endorsement and application steps moving within that window. If you are missing experience, the Associate of ISC2 path may let you hold exam-passed status while completing the requirement; its time limit is six years. Associate status is not the CCSP certification.
If you do not pass
Use the proficiency feedback to choose a review area, then examine the reasoning behind your own practice errors. A lower domain indicator is not an exact score and does not mean that every task in the domain is weak. For example, feedback on Cloud Data Security could point you back to data classification, key management, retention or auditability. Your error log can show which of those ideas caused the trouble.
Before paying for another attempt, make a short recovery plan. Map the feedback to the August 2026 outline, identify one or two repeated reasoning errors, and select fresh scenarios that test them. If you guessed correctly on a practice item, count it as a review candidate. Repeating familiar questions can make a score rise without fixing the underlying gap.
CCSP retake limits and waiting periods
ISC2 allows up to four attempts for the CCSP program within a 12-month period. The required test-free interval grows with successive retakes: 30 days after the first attempt, 60 days after the second, and 90 days after the third and each later attempt. The interval is counted from the most recent exam attempt. These waits are minimum eligibility rules, not recommended study durations.
| Attempt that did not pass | Minimum wait before the next attempt | What to plan |
|---|---|---|
| First | 30 test-free days | Use feedback and book an available appointment after the wait |
| Second | 60 test-free days | Address repeated gaps before spending on another attempt |
| Third | 90 test-free days | Allow for focused review and any voucher deadline |
| Fourth in a 12-month period | No fifth attempt within the limit | Track the rolling 12-month cap before choosing a new date |
For a simple calendar illustration, imagine a candidate sits once, receives a fail result and then studies while the first waiting period runs. The earliest next sitting is only possible after the 30 test-free days and only if an appointment is available. If the candidate fails again, the next interval is 60 test-free days from that second sitting. Appointment inventory, travel and a bundle expiry can make the practical date later.
Plan retake cost and voucher dates
A new standard CCSP attempt is a separate paid registration unless the exam product explicitly includes another attempt. The current standard price is US $599 in the Americas and Asia Pacific regions; EMEA and the United Kingdom use listed local prices, and tax depends on the exam location. A two-attempt training bundle has its own price and terms. Check whether the included attempt must be used within 180 days before relying on it.
A candidate with an exam-only purchase should budget for a second registration if a retake is needed. Someone with a bundled second attempt should record the product deadline next to the earliest retake date. If those dates leave little time for study, the bundle may not be useful even though the exam attempt is included. A separate appointment change fee does not extend an expired exam entitlement.
A practical retake schedule
A candidate who fails on the first attempt should not treat the 30-day wait as a target date. Start with the test-center domain feedback, compare it with practice errors and choose a realistic review period. Suppose the first attempt is on a Monday and the candidate spends the following weeks repairing a gap in data lifecycle and provider-assurance scope. The candidate can book only after the required test-free interval, but can wait longer to finish the review and find an appointment that fits.
After a second failure, the next mandatory interval is 60 test-free days. A candidate who has repeatedly confused customer and provider duties should use the extra time to draw responsibility boundaries for SaaS, PaaS and IaaS, then test them with new scenarios. If the same error persists, changing books alone may not help; the candidate needs to explain why the responsibility belongs to one actor and what evidence supports the choice.
The third retake wait is 90 test-free days. At that point, it is sensible to review the entire outline and build a plan that prevents repeated weak areas from dominating. The policy still allows a fourth attempt within the 12-month period, but does not promise a fifth attempt inside that period. A candidate should decide whether a new date is supported by learning evidence rather than urgency.
| Planning example | Attempts purchased | Exam-fee illustration for Americas/APAC | What to remember |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pass on first attempt | One | $599 before tax | The certification application and first AMF follow the passing exam |
| Fail once, then pass | Two | $1,198 before tax if bought separately | Wait at least 30 test-free days; a bundle may have different terms |
| Three attempts in the period | Three | $1,797 before tax if bought separately | Waits grow after each attempt; review before paying again |
| Four attempts in the period | Four | $2,396 before tax if bought separately | This reaches the 12-month attempt limit |
These totals use the current US $599 standard registration amount and assume each attempt is bought separately in the Americas or Asia Pacific. They exclude tax, study costs and AMF. EMEA and UK candidates see local listed prices. A bundle may change the payment schedule, but its expiration rules still matter.
Make domain feedback actionable
Turn a domain label into a task list. For Cloud Platform and Infrastructure Security, for example, review tenant isolation, the management plane, network paths and recovery objectives. Then use a new scenario to identify whether the issue is physical infrastructure, customer configuration or a provider-operated control. Do the same for a second weaker domain and verify the reasoning with the current outline.
Keep three separate records: official result, domain feedback and personal practice errors. A question you missed because you did not know a concept needs study. A question you missed because you overlooked “before migration” needs careful reading. A correct answer selected by luck still deserves review. Separating these causes helps a candidate make a more useful plan and prevents a practice percentage from hiding repeated reasoning mistakes.
Decide whether the next attempt is ready
Before registering again, see whether your explanation of a missed scenario has changed. A useful review note names the task, the clue, the control owner and why the right action fits. For example, if a question involved provider assurance, write which service was excluded and what evidence is still needed. “Study Domain 6 more” is too broad to guide the next session.
A simple retake checklist can help: you have reviewed the weakest feedback areas; you can answer unfamiliar questions without relying on remembered wording; you can explain wrong options; you have a date after the required waiting period; and the voucher or bundle remains valid. If one condition is missing, identify whether it is a learning problem or a scheduling constraint before choosing a date.
If the official result is delayed, the test-center slip remains unofficial. Avoid treating it as a final certification record or making an irreversible work announcement based on it. ISC2 sends the official result by email and does not release results by phone. Keep the address on the certification account accessible, then follow the official message when it arrives.
Keep the retake decision grounded
Do not register immediately just to preserve momentum if you cannot identify what will change in your preparation. Conversely, a failing result does not mean you need to reread every topic from the beginning. Use the feedback, error log and current outline to choose a narrow correction, then test that correction against unfamiliar cases. If performance remains unstable across domains, widen the review before committing to another date.
Use a result without overreading CAT
The CCSP exam uses CAT and can end after different item counts within its published range. Do not infer the result from a short session, a long session, the perceived difficulty of the last questions or your feeling at checkout. Candidates cannot see the system’s internal estimate. The official result, not a personal theory about CAT, is the basis for the next decision.
A fail result is useful when you turn it into a study decision. A pass result is useful when you complete the separate credential application correctly. In either case, save the official communication and use the path it specifies.
Common questions
Do I receive a CCSP score number?
No. ISC2 states that results are reported as pass or fail rather than a numeric score. Candidates who fail receive domain proficiency feedback, which helps identify areas for review but does not show a raw percentage or item-by-item results.
How soon will ISC2 send the official result?
The proctor gives an unofficial result at checkout, and ISC2 emails the official result. ISC2 says analysis can delay release by approximately six to eight weeks in some cases, so a same-day official result is not guaranteed.
How many times may I retake CCSP?
ISC2 permits up to four attempts in a 12-month period for each certification program. The required waits are 30 test-free days after the first attempt, 60 after the second, and 90 after the third or later attempt.
Does passing the exam make me a CCSP?
Passing is the exam step. You must still satisfy experience requirements, submit an endorsed application, agree to the ISC2 Code of Ethics and pay the first Annual Maintenance Fee before ISC2 awards the credential.
