CMA registration sequence
The CMA registration process has two distinct bookings: first register with IMA for an exam part, then schedule a seat with Prometric. Joining IMA or paying the CMA entrance fee enrolls you in the program; it does not reserve a test appointment. Complete each step early enough that the authorization is available and an appointment remains in your chosen window.
- Testing windows
- January/February, May/June, and September/October
- Order
- IMA membership and program enrollment, part registration, then Prometric appointment
- Current 2026 deadline
- October 15 to register for the September/October 2026 window
- Parts
- Part 1 and Part 2 may be taken in either order
- Join IMA and maintain active membership in the category for which you qualify.
- Enroll in the CMA program and pay the entrance fee.
- Choose Part 1 or Part 2 and register through IMA for the selected testing window.
- Receive the exam authorization information and instructions.
- Schedule the specific date, time, and test center with Prometric.
- Check the appointment confirmation, ID rules, testing policies, and travel or online logistics.
Each exam part requires its own registration and fee. Candidates may take the parts in either order. You can prepare for and sit Part 1 before Part 2, or reverse that sequence. A payment for one part is not a seat reservation until the Prometric appointment is successfully scheduled.
Current testing windows and registration deadlines
IMA offers CMA examinations in three recurring windows: January/February, May/June, and September/October. Its current schedule lists May 1 through June 30, 2026, with a June 15 last day to register, and September 1 through October 31, 2026, with an October 15 registration deadline. Those are exam registration dates, not necessarily the last moment to obtain a preferred Prometric appointment.
As of October 6, 2026, the current IMA page lists the September/October window and the October 15 registration deadline. Exact January/February 2027 dates and deadlines are not yet posted on that page. The regular window pattern helps you plan, but do not infer a specific future registration cutoff or first/last testing date from the pattern alone.
Prometric appointments are limited by center, date, and local capacity. Registering with IMA near the end of the window does not ensure an appointment on your preferred day. IMA recommends registering in advance. If you work full time or need a specific testing location, select a window after estimating how much study time you need and reserve the appointment once authorization permits.
Choose the window that fits your preparation
Set a realistic target date before paying for an exam part. Work backward from the window’s registration deadline and expected appointment availability. Include study time, a full practice session, final review, and a small buffer for work or family disruptions. Choose a testing window based on readiness and appointment logistics rather than choosing the earliest date simply to create pressure.
For example, a candidate beginning Part 1 study in early October may want a January/February appointment. That can be a reasonable plan if the candidate has enough weekly study time, can complete mixed practice, and sees improving results. But the exact 2027 window dates were not posted in the current IMA schedule at the time of drafting, so the candidate should use the official dates when selecting the appointment rather than inventing them.
A candidate already well prepared with a few days left before the October 15, 2026 registration deadline may consider September/October only if an actual appointment remains and enough preparation is complete. Paying the exam fee without an available appointment creates avoidable risk. Check both the IMA registration cutoff and Prometric seat availability before committing.
Registering for Part 1 versus Part 2
The two exam parts can be taken in either order and do not need to be taken together. Part 1 covers financial planning, performance, and analytics. Part 2 covers strategic financial management. Candidates who register for both parts should still schedule each appointment separately and ensure both fit within the program’s three-year completion period.
Some candidates plan one part per testing window to protect study time. Others prepare for both in parallel or schedule them in one window if they are ready and appointment availability allows. Each part takes four hours, and a same-day double sitting would require planning around appointment scheduling, fatigue, travel, and test-center rules. Passing one part does not reduce the content or passing threshold for the other.
Your chosen part should match the official outline and your readiness. If budgeting and internal controls are familiar but corporate finance is not, Part 1 first may be sensible. If financial analysis and valuation are stronger, Part 2 may be a better first test. Avoid choosing based only on a rumor that one part is easier.
Authorization and Prometric scheduling
After registering and paying with IMA, follow the authorization instructions for scheduling through Prometric. Keep the authorization number, confirmation email, and account details accessible. When booking, confirm the exam part, testing window, date, start time, address, and language or delivery details shown. Use the correct name and personal information so the appointment record matches your identification.
Test centers may have different availability. Search for a nearby location and compare practical travel time, rather than selecting the closest center without checking the appointment details. A date that looks available in one search may disappear before confirmation. Save the final confirmation and calendar the arrival time, identification requirements, and the center’s directions.
The CMA exam is administered at Prometric test centers worldwide. Follow the current handbook and appointment instructions for identification, calculator use, prohibited items, check-in, and exam-day procedure. Do not assume an online-proctored option is available for your region or appointment; IMA’s current program page describes global testing-center delivery, and the appointment system determines the available locations.
Changing or missing an appointment
Prometric appointment changes and IMA exam registrations are governed by separate rules. A cancellation or reschedule may only allow a different date in the same testing window; it does not automatically transfer your exam registration to another window or create a refund. Close-in cancellation may trigger a vendor charge or forfeit the exam registration, depending on the applicable deadline and policy.
If you discover a conflict, act as soon as possible. Review the appointment confirmation and current Prometric policy, then use the official scheduling channel before the deadline. Do not wait until after the appointment and assume you can move the fee to another window. A no-show can require a new exam registration and payment.
A candidate who needs to change a window entirely should not simply cancel the Prometric appointment and expect the IMA exam fee to carry forward. IMA’s FAQ explains that appointment cancellation does not itself create a refund or automatic window change. Contact the official program support channel about window-transfer options while the current registration is still active.
Worked scheduling situations
You have purchased an exam but no appointment is booked
A registration is not a confirmed seat. Use the authorization instructions to schedule with Prometric immediately, then save the confirmation. If no appointment is available in the intended window, contact IMA before the window closes to understand whether a transfer is possible; do not assume the fee remains valid indefinitely.
A work trip conflicts with the booked date
Check the exact Prometric cancellation deadline on the appointment confirmation and the current policy. If the permitted change window is still open, move the date within the same exam window and verify the new confirmation. If the deadline has passed, ask Prometric and IMA about the specific options rather than relying on a forum post with old rules.
You want to sit in October but are not ready
The October 15 registration deadline is not a reason to rush into an exam attempt. Compare your mixed practice results and available appointment dates with the January/February window. Since exact 2027 dates are not yet posted on the current IMA schedule, wait for the official window details before booking a date. Preserve your eligibility and budget for an attempt when preparation is stronger.
Program deadlines and planning beyond the appointment
Candidates must complete both CMA parts within three years after entry into the certification program; otherwise passed results may expire and the entrance fee may need to be paid again. This period is longer than a single testing window but still shapes a multi-part plan. Avoid waiting so long between parts that the first score approaches expiration.
Education and experience requirements have their own completion timing. You can sit before they are complete under program rules, but final certification requires verified documents. Schedule time to obtain transcripts, translations or evaluations, and employer experience confirmation. Registration planning should consider both exam appointments and administrative eligibility work.
Registration checklist
- Confirm IMA membership and program enrollment status.
- Choose a testing window and check the IMA registration deadline.
- Register separately for the exam part or parts you plan to take.
- Use the authorization details to schedule each Prometric appointment.
- Check the exact appointment confirmation, ID name, location, and arrival instructions.
- Calendar the Prometric change deadline and understand that a window transfer is separate.
- Track the three-year program completion period and the education and experience documentation requirements.
Key point
CMA registration has a clear sequence: active IMA membership, program enrollment, exam-part payment, authorization, then a Prometric appointment. The 2026 windows and October 15 registration cutoff are published; exact 2027 dates are not yet on the current schedule page. Book early, keep confirmation records, and treat appointment changes, refunds, and window transfers as separate policy questions.
