CPA ISC Registration and Scheduling
ISC registration normally begins with a jurisdiction application or evaluation, followed by eligibility approval, section payment and appointment scheduling.
- ISC is a Discipline section, so testing appointments are limited to the first month of each calendar quarter.
- Allow time for board review and plan around the NTS expiration date.

The CPA Exam application sequence
The Uniform CPA Exam is administered through a jurisdiction process. Candidates first identify the board that will evaluate their education and eligibility. Depending on the jurisdiction, an initial application, education evaluation or application of intent may precede the section application. The state board and NASBA instructions determine which forms and documents apply.
A common sequence is to submit the required application and transcripts, receive an eligibility decision, select ISC, pay the applicable section fees, receive a Notice to Schedule (NTS), and then reserve an appointment with the testing provider. Some boards use different names or ordering, so follow the current candidate instructions for the jurisdiction.
Choosing ISC and obtaining an NTS
When applying for a section, select Information Systems and Controls (ISC) as the Discipline. The authorization identifies the section and the period in which you may sit. Review the NTS as soon as it arrives: confirm your name, section, jurisdiction details and expiration date. Resolve a discrepancy before booking or appearing at the test center.
Do not apply for an exam date before understanding the authorization period. An NTS has a limited validity period set under the applicable process. If the notice expires before you sit, the authorization and fee may be lost and another application or payment may be needed. Plan a realistic study period and appointment availability first.
ISC quarterly testing window
Core sections are available year-round. Disciplines, including ISC, are scheduled during the first month of each calendar quarter: January, April, July and October. The exact appointment supply depends on location and capacity. A candidate who misses a quarter’s first month may need to target the next quarter, subject to an active NTS and available seats.
Build backward from the intended window. Account for transcript processing, eligibility review, study, payment processing and appointment selection. The NTS expiration date can constrain which quarterly window is practical. A study calendar ending late in a quarter does not create an ISC appointment in its second or third month.
Scheduling, changing or cancelling
Use the scheduling instructions associated with the NTS and the current examination provider. Choose an appointment that leaves time to prepare while remaining inside the permitted period. Confirm the test center, date, start time and identification requirements. Save the confirmation details and check them again before travel.
If you need to reschedule or cancel, act before the applicable deadline. The permitted changes, deadlines and any fees depend on the governing appointment rules and how much notice you provide. A missed appointment or late change can have financial consequences. Check the current NASBA and provider terms instead of relying on an old appointment email.
Testing outside your jurisdiction
Some candidates may be able to test at a location outside their home jurisdiction or country, but this depends on eligibility, administration availability and additional fees. Confirm that the destination is permitted for your NTS and that the chosen center offers the Discipline in the selected window. International testing may have separate charges and restrictions.
A practical registration checklist
- Identify the board that will evaluate your education and exam eligibility.
- Read its current application steps, deadlines and document rules.
- Submit transcripts and other requested records early.
- Select ISC when applying for the Discipline section.
- Review the NTS section name, expiration date and candidate details.
- Book only within the Discipline’s first-month quarterly window.
- Check appointment change deadlines and test-center identification rules.
Keep exam eligibility separate from licensure
Authorization to sit for ISC is not a license decision. Candidates generally need to complete education, experience, ethics or other conditions set by the jurisdiction before a CPA license is issued. A candidate can be eligible to sit under one route but still need additional requirements for certification. Ask the state board about the licensing pathway that applies to you.
Application and scheduling charges are separate from course costs and may be assessed at different points in the process. Keep receipts and track each section authorization. If your exam plan changes, review the NTS and rescheduling rules before assuming that a payment can be transferred.
Sequence applications around your target quarter
Before opening an application, identify the jurisdiction where you intend to seek licensure. Read the board’s current process and determine whether it requires a transcript evaluation, an Application of Intent or a separate education review before a section application. Keep a copy of the instructions used and note the date of any deadlines that apply to you.
Work backward from the first month of the quarter in which you hope to sit for ISC. Allow time for every school to send official records, for the board to evaluate them, for payment processing and for an appointment to become available. These steps are not fully under the candidate’s control. An optimistic calendar that leaves no room for a missing transcript can cost an entire testing window.
After an NTS arrives, make a personal deadline for booking and a reminder well before it expires. If the NTS cannot cover your preferred quarterly window, do not assume the section payment can be transferred without conditions. Read the actual notice and the jurisdiction’s rules before making a change.
If your application or appointment changes
If an application remains incomplete, identify the exact missing item and who must provide it. A transcript may have been requested but not received, or an evaluation may need more course information. Contact the responsible board or evaluator through its official process and keep a record of the response. Re-submitting duplicate forms can add confusion without resolving the missing condition.
If your NTS arrives later than expected, check the expiration date before choosing a date. A Discipline window may be approaching, but an appointment is useful only if you can prepare and attend within the authorization. Do not make travel plans until the scheduling confirmation is complete.
If you need to change an appointment, check the deadline and fee immediately. A reschedule may be possible without the same consequence at different notice periods, but those rules can change. The NTS, appointment confirmation and current candidate guide are the appropriate places to verify the terms for your sitting.
If you cannot sit before the NTS expires, review whether a new eligibility application is required and whether any fee credit applies. Do not assume an unused NTS automatically moves to a later quarter. A missed Discipline window can create a delay even when your study preparation is complete.
Appointment scenarios to plan for
If the desired October window is approaching but your education review is pending, compare the likely approval date with the available appointment inventory. Do not apply for an NTS before you understand the validity period and your ability to sit. A later quarter may avoid paying for an authorization that cannot realistically be used.
If your NTS expires during a quarter, its printed expiration and jurisdiction guidance control. Do not assume that a seat on the last day of a window is valid if the notice expires earlier. Book within the period and retain confirmation.
If your name differs between the application and identification, resolve it before test day. Candidate instructions specify accepted identification and name matching. A booking confirmation does not necessarily override the identification rule. Review the current guide, particularly if a passport or government ID has a different name format.
When testing outside your jurisdiction, verify both the board’s authorization and the testing location’s availability for ISC. International arrangements may carry added fees. A location that administers Core sections may not offer the Discipline on every date.
Keep a record of each authorization
Save the NTS, section payment receipt and appointment confirmation. Record the expiration date in a calendar reminder and retain the contact details for the board or NASBA service that handled the application. If your plan changes, these records help identify which payment or authorization is affected.
Read candidate instructions again shortly before the appointment. Identification requirements, check-in procedures and permitted items can affect whether you are admitted. A prior sitting’s routine may not match updated instructions, so use the guide for the current administration.
Candidates taking the exam internationally should confirm travel documents and local site rules as well as exam authorization. Build a buffer for travel and testing-center logistics, particularly when the appointment is available only during a narrow Discipline window.
Confirm the quarterly date before paying
A Discipline sitting must fit the first month of the quarter. Check that the board approval, NTS and appointment all align with that period. A candidate who receives approval after a window closes may need to target the next one.
Do not confuse an application submission date with a guaranteed test date. The appointment is a separate reservation and availability can vary by center. Once booked, retain the confirmation and verify the location and time.
Contact the correct administrator
A state board handles education and eligibility questions; NASBA materials explain candidate and examination processes; the scheduling provider handles appointment details. Directing a question to the right office can reduce delays. Keep written responses with your application record.
Keep the NTS details available
Bring the required identification and follow the current test-center instructions. The NTS and appointment confirmation are useful records but do not replace accepted identification.
Common questions
When can I schedule ISC?
ISC is scheduled in the first month of each calendar quarter: January, April, July and October.
Can I select ISC with a Core section application?
The CPA Exam requires three Core sections and one Discipline. Follow the jurisdiction application process to request the ISC Discipline.
How long is an ISC NTS valid?
The authorization period is limited and depends on current candidate rules. Check the expiration printed on your NTS and the jurisdiction instructions.
