Start with what registration already includes

When you enroll and register for CFA Level I, CFA Institute gives you access to the Learning Ecosystem, or LES, for the exam level you selected. The LES includes the digital curriculum, practice questions, mock exams, the Practical Skills Module, flashcards, a study planner, and progress tools. The exact curriculum version is tied to your exam window, so open the correct year's materials in your candidate account.

CFA Institute describes the LES as containing more than 1,000 practice questions and two official mock exams. The official mocks are released approximately 60 days before each exam window. The platform also provides the required PSM. Finish that module before results are released; access to preparation materials does not make the PSM optional.

ResourceAccess and roleBest fit
Learning Ecosystem (LES)Included with registration for the selected CFA exam; curriculum, practice, mocks, study tools, and PSMCandidates who want the official curriculum and baseline question practice
CFA Institute Practice PackOptional add-on; additional official questions, additional mock exams, and a Prometric-style mock experience; current store price USD 299Candidates who want more official practice and value the interface simulation
Third-party prep providerSeparately purchased material such as condensed notes, instruction, original practice, or extra mocksCandidates who need a different explanation, more structure, or a specific type of practice

The Practice Pack is separate from the included LES. CFA Institute lists it as an optional Level I add-on for USD 299. It extends the official practice options, but it does not replace registration, the curriculum, or the learning work. A candidate who has not yet used the included question bank may get more value by starting there before purchasing another question source.

What the official LES does well

The LES keeps the assigned curriculum, practice, and candidate tools in one official platform. Its strongest use is as the curriculum reference and the place to complete the PSM and available CFA Institute practice. Candidates can track progress against the selected exam materials rather than relying on an older set of printed readings.

The digital environment is also useful for locating questions by curriculum content and revisiting a topic after a gap. Use the official curriculum when an outside summary conflicts with the learning outcome or wording for your exam year. A third-party provider can explain an idea in a different way, but CFA Institute's curriculum remains the primary source for what the program teaches.

An included resource is not automatically the right teaching format for every candidate. Some people work comfortably through readings and questions. Others need an instructor to explain a concept, a concise map of a long reading, or more feedback on why an answer is wrong. Identify that specific friction before paying for another package.

What the optional Practice Pack adds

The Practice Pack is built for candidates who want additional official practice beyond the materials that come with registration. CFA Institute says it includes extra questions, immediate access to additional mock exams, and a Prometric mock exam that simulates the test-day experience. The current Level I store page lists it at USD 299.

That makes the pack most relevant when your main concern is the amount of official-style practice or getting familiar with a Prometric-style interface. It is less compelling if you still have a large portion of the curriculum unread or if your actual problem is understanding accounting, probability, or valuation. More questions do not repair a missing concept unless you review the explanation and learn the method.

Check that the selected pack matches your exam window. CFA Institute lists different window-specific products. Do not assume access purchased for one sitting automatically follows a candidate to another window; the product terms and candidate account determine access.

What third-party prep providers add

Third-party providers package instruction in different ways. Common features include condensed study notes, on-demand video, live or scheduled classes, original practice questions, mock exams, instructor support, progress analytics, and printed materials. These tools can create structure around a long self-study curriculum, but their content is separately produced and can differ in detail, format, or explanation style.

Kaplan Schweser, for example, sells Level I packages built around SchweserNotes and may bundle video lessons, question practice, mocks, flashcards, review sessions, and instructor options depending on the package. UWorld's Level I courses describe an integrated set of videos, study guides, question bank, flashcards, planning tools, analytics, and mocks, with the exact inclusions varying by package. These are provider descriptions of their current products, not a guarantee that a package will improve an individual's result.

If you compare a product, check its exam year, access end date, exact inclusions, and whether a mock is the provider's own or an official CFA Institute mock. CFA Institute's prep-provider rules require provider materials to be updated yearly, and the Institute warns candidates to verify coverage against the current topic outline. Do not treat an old book or question bank as current solely because it carries the CFA name.

Understand the prep-provider label

CFA Institute maintains a Prep Provider Program and identifies longer-term partners as Approved Prep Providers. Listed providers agree to program guidelines, including yearly updates and other standards. The listing is not a seal of approval: CFA Institute says it does not endorse, promote, or warrant the accuracy of prep courses, nor does it verify providers' pass-rate claims.

A provider should not present itself as CFA Institute or suggest that a course is official. CFA Institute also says providers cannot include official CFA Institute mock exam questions in their own products. A provider's question count should refer to its own questions, not include official questions available through the LES. That distinction helps you compare what you are actually buying.

Membership in the provider program is one screening point, not a ranking of learning quality. Compare instructors, curriculum-year coverage, question explanations, access period, and the way the material fits your study habits. Be cautious of promises that a particular number of study hours guarantees passing or of pass-rate marketing that does not explain who was counted.

Choose based on the problem you need to solve

Your study problemResource to try firstWhat to add only if needed
I have not completed the curriculum readingsLES curriculum and plannerA structured third-party course if self-study needs more instruction
I understand lessons but need practiceIncluded LES question bank and mocksPractice Pack or a provider's additional original question bank
I cannot follow a dense explanationOfficial lesson plus a worked exampleVideo lesson, instructor-led review, or condensed notes
I lose track of weak topicsLES progress tools and an error logA provider platform with useful topic analytics
I feel uneasy with exam softwareOfficial exam-day guide and practice interfaceOptional Prometric-style Practice Pack simulation

Try to name the gap in one sentence before shopping. "I need more questions" is less precise than "I understand the method but need fresh mixed questions on fixed income and accounting with explanations." The second description makes it easier to compare a question bank with a lecture package and to avoid paying for features you will not use.

A sensible way to combine materials

One workable combination is the LES as the curriculum and official practice source, plus one outside resource that addresses a specific need. For example, use a concise summary to preview a dense reading, then work through the official learning outcome and test yourself in the LES. Or use a provider's video for a difficult concept, then return to original mixed questions without the video open.

If you learn well from reading

Start with the LES readings and questions. Use the planner to divide the curriculum into sessions and return to older lessons for spaced retrieval. If you later run short of fresh practice, compare the optional Practice Pack with a third-party bank based on explanation quality and access length. Buying a full lecture package may duplicate resources you already use comfortably.

If the official reading does not click

Try a second explanation on the specific learning outcome. A short video or instructor-led class may help with a difficult concept, while a concise summary can help you see the chapter structure. Then close the outside material and solve new questions. If the explanation still does not transfer to practice, use the curriculum and worked examples to locate the missing step.

If you mostly need exam simulation

First use the official mock exams when they become available and review them carefully. If interface unfamiliarity is the issue, the optional Practice Pack includes a Prometric-style simulation. A third-party mock can add another timed attempt, but it will be provider-authored and may differ from the actual exam in calibration and wording. Treat the result as diagnostic, not as a converted CFA score.

Keep a single error log even if questions come from several platforms. Record the topic, error type, and what you will try next. Without that record, candidates can spend time repeating comfortable practice instead of repairing weaknesses.

Avoid maintaining several overlapping question banks unless you have a reason. Switching among platforms can scatter progress data, duplicate practice, and expose you to conflicting conventions. If two explanations disagree, use the current official curriculum to resolve the issue and submit a genuine curriculum error through CFA Institute's process when appropriate.

Keep the exam year visible in your notes and purchases. CFA Institute updates its curriculum each year, and a provider's package may have separate 2026 and 2027 versions. A resource can still teach a stable idea while missing an updated reading, revised learning outcome, or different weight. Use the correct year's official topic outline as your coverage checklist.

A package listing videos and a large question bank tells you the format and volume the provider describes. It does not tell you whether an explanation of a particular ethical standard is complete, whether every question is equally representative, or whether its mocks match official difficulty. Inspect a sample in the topic you find hardest before committing.

Questions to ask before you buy

  • Does the product explicitly cover the exam year and window you plan to sit?
  • Does it explain why an answer is correct and why plausible alternatives are wrong?
  • Are the questions provider-authored, CFA Institute-authored, or a mixture?
  • What happens to access after the exam window, and what does an extension require?
  • Does the package include live instruction, on-demand videos, print materials, or only a question bank?
  • Are claims about outcomes clearly sourced and defined, or are they presented as a guarantee?

My view is that candidates often buy another package because they feel behind, when what they need is a smaller, more specific change in method. Start by using the LES you already have. Add a product when you can explain what it contributes: an instructor, another explanation, a mock interface, or practice with better diagnostics.

A candidate already progressing through the LES and scoring well on fresh topic questions may need only a final mock, not another full course. A candidate who repeatedly cannot understand a concept after reading may get more from one clear instructor or video than from buying several thousand additional questions. The best next step depends on the learning problem.

Keep your expectations realistic

No preparation product can guarantee a pass or reveal secure exam questions. Your registration gives access to the official curriculum and tools; an optional package or third-party product changes the amount or format of preparation. It does not change the exam standard.

A useful choice is the least complicated set of materials that addresses your actual learning needs. Compare curriculum alignment and explanation quality, not just question counts. Then spend more time learning from each question than collecting another platform login.

Common questions

Is the CFA Learning Ecosystem included with Level I registration?

Yes. Registration includes access to the Learning Ecosystem for the selected exam level, including the curriculum, practice questions, mock exams, study tools, and the Practical Skills Module.

Is the CFA Practice Pack included in the Learning Ecosystem?

No. The Practice Pack is an optional paid add-on. CFA Institute describes it as adding questions and mock exams, including a Prometric-style mock experience. The current Level I store page lists USD 299.

Does CFA Institute approve a prep provider's course quality?

CFA Institute has a Prep Provider Program with standards and a list of providers, but it says the listing is not an endorsement or warranty of course accuracy. Candidates should compare a product with the current curriculum and examine its actual features.

Should I buy Kaplan Schweser or UWorld for CFA Level I?

The right choice depends on your learning gap. Compare the current exam-year package, teaching format, practice explanations, mock access, and term of access. Kaplan Schweser and UWorld describe different bundled formats; neither package is necessary for every candidate.

Can I study using only third-party notes?

A third-party summary can make a large curriculum easier to organize, but compare it with the current CFA Institute curriculum and learning outcomes. Use the official curriculum to resolve omissions or conflicting explanations, especially when an exam-year change applies.
