California Bar Study Plan
A California Bar plan must cover written essays, the Performance Test and MBE through February 2028.
- Diagnose each component separately, study California subject maps alongside national MBE rules, and build timed practice across the exam's full schedule.
- For July 2028 and later, use the NextGen UBE blueprint instead of legacy-format materials.

Match the plan to your exam date
California's exam version depends on the administration. Through February 2028, candidates prepare for five one-hour essays, a 90-minute Performance Test and 200 MBE questions. Beginning July 2028, the exam is NextGen UBE only. Decide the version before choosing books, practice questions or a calendar. A transition candidate should not mix formats without a clear reason.
Also confirm your eligibility and application status early. Educational evaluation, moral-character review and MPRE scheduling can take time and run separately from exam study.
Diagnose the three components
Take a timed essay on a subject you have studied, complete a PT task using a file and library, and answer a mixed MBE set. The purpose is to locate weaknesses. Record whether errors came from rule knowledge, issue selection, analysis, organization, source use or pace. A single combined score can hide a large gap in one component.
For essay review, compare your issue list and rule statements with released questions and selected answers. For PT review, check task compliance, rule extraction, fact application and organization. For MBE review, explain each missed and guessed item. Do not treat an unofficial practice percentage as a passing-score prediction.
An eight-week framework
| Week | Focus | Practice evidence |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Confirm exam version; diagnose essay, PT and MBE | Baseline and error log |
| 2 | Civil Procedure, Contracts and Torts | Timed essay outlines and focused MCQs |
| 3 | Evidence, Criminal Law and Constitutional Law | Mixed MBE sets and issue statements |
| 4 | Property, Community Property and Remedies | California distinctions applied to facts |
| 5 | Business Associations, Trusts, Wills and Professional Responsibility | Essay combinations and rule recall |
| 6 | PT structure and remaining weak subjects | Timed file-and-library work |
| 7 | Full or partial simulations across components | Pacing and recovery strategy |
| 8 | Targeted review, short timed sets and logistics | Repeatable process, adequate rest |
The schedule is a sequence, not an hours-per-day prescription. Extend it to fit work and family obligations. If time is short, keep exposure to all three components and reduce passive review first. For NextGen, replace legacy component drills with integrated sets and performance tasks matching the correct blueprint.
Weekly study cycle
- Review one California subject map and write key rules from memory.
- Complete a timed essay or structured issue outline, then compare it with released material.
- Answer mixed MBE questions and explain the rule behind every error.
- Complete a PT exercise, focusing on the requested product and supplied law.
- Revisit difficult distinctions after a delay and update an error log.
- Reserve a weekly block to catch up and protect sleep.
Write better essays
A useful essay identifies issues, states concise rules and applies facts to each element. Use headings to separate claims and defenses. Address counterarguments where facts support them. Avoid a rule dump that never reaches the client or legal consequence. California selected answers show how past examinees approached questions, but they are examples rather than a guaranteed grading template.
Practise both full essays and short outlines. Outlines help issue spotting, while full writing exposes organization and time problems. Review at least one complete answer regularly so that a study plan does not overemphasize recognition.
Practise the PT as a task
Read the assignment before the file. Identify the reader and deliverable, then extract rules from the library and apply the file facts. A memo, client letter and argument require different structures. Work under a timer and reserve time to proofread whether each requested task was answered.
Prepare for the MBE
The MBE is six hours across two sessions of 100 questions. Its seven subjects are evenly represented among scored items. Use focused practice while learning a rule, then mixed questions to train issue recognition. Review missed answers for rule gaps, misread facts, timing and distractor logic.
Final stretch
In the final weeks, complete realistic sessions and refine pacing. Do not add a new resource every few days. Use released questions, your rule sheets and error log to target repeated gaps. Confirm exam logistics, accommodation arrangements and admission documents. A rested candidate who can execute a repeatable plan is better prepared than one who has read more pages but never practised under time.
Set a weekly rhythm for all three components
A workable legacy-format week includes California rule learning, at least one essay exercise, a PT session or portion, and mixed MBE practice. Arrange the blocks around your available time rather than relying on an idealized study day. If you have fewer hours, shorten passive review before removing all contact with a component. The goal is recurring practice and feedback, not a perfect calendar.
| Study block | Practice | Review question |
|---|---|---|
| Essay | Outline one issue set and write one timed answer | Which issue or fact application did I omit? |
| Performance Test | Read a task, mark the requested product and draft from a file and library | Did I answer the task and use favorable and adverse authority? |
| MBE | Complete a mixed timed set | Was the miss a rule gap, misread, distractor or pacing choice? |
| California doctrine | Retrieve a rule and compare it with the general rule | What fact makes the California variation apply? |
| Spaced review | Revisit prior errors after several days | Can I state and apply the rule without the old explanation? |
An eight-week sequence
In week one, take a limited diagnostic in each component and set the exam-version calendar. Weeks two and three build core doctrine and write short essay outlines while completing regular MBE sets. Week four adds full essays and a PT under time, then compares results with the initial diagnostic. Weeks five and six emphasize mixed subjects, essay combinations and a full PT. Week seven rehearses longer sessions and repairs repeated errors. Week eight focuses on retrieval, pacing and the real test sequence rather than adding large new outlines.
If your schedule spans several months, use more than one cycle. Revisit each subject after a delay and rotate which component receives a full simulation. If your exam is near, keep broad exposure but target the weakest repeated error. The sample sequence is a structure to adapt, not a promise that eight weeks is sufficient for every candidate.
Make essay practice measurable
For every essay, record whether you spotted each material issue, stated a workable rule, applied facts on both sides and reached a supported conclusion. One missed element can be more important than a small wording difference. After writing, compare your analysis with the released question and selected answers. Mark issue gaps separately from thin application and time problems; the remedy differs.
For example, if a community-property essay reaches the right characterization but overlooks a separate-property contribution, do a tracing drill with a new set of dates and account records. If you identify the rule but never explain why the source of funds matters, write a short paragraph applying both the community and separate-property facts. Rewriting the entire essay is less efficient than repairing the specific reasoning step, unless organization was the problem.
Train PT work with source materials
A PT session should practise more than typing quickly. Read the assignment first, then identify the audience, format, issues, time limit and any requested recommendation. Read the file for facts and the library for rules. A quick authority chart can record the rule, holding, relevant facts and whether the source helps or hurts the client's position.
When a case in the library cuts against the client, distinguish it if the facts support a difference, or explain why it controls. Ignoring adverse authority often produces a one-sided work product. Reserve time to check that the requested document is complete, headings are useful, every question is answered, and the conclusion matches the analysis. Use a fresh PT for later practice so you are testing the skill rather than recalling a model response.
Use MBE practice to maintain speed and breadth
Begin a subject with focused questions to test newly learned rules, then move to mixed sets where the subject is not announced. Record correct guesses because uncertain reasoning can recur as an error. Review why the best answer fits the facts and why the most tempting alternative does not. Increase the length of timed sets gradually, then practise the full two-session rhythm as the exam approaches.
If accuracy falls late, determine whether you spent too long on hard items, read the call too quickly or lost concentration. Use a checkpoint to move on when you have identified the issue but cannot resolve close choices. Do not change answers without a rule-based reason. These are observable habits that timed practice can improve.
Switch plans at the NextGen transition
For July 2028 and February 2029, California has announced a NextGen UBE without a California component. Candidates for those administrations should use the NextGen blueprint and task formats rather than continue a legacy essay, PT and MBE calendar. A California component is being developed for no earlier than July 2029, so later candidates should distinguish announced format from content that has not yet been finalized.
Near the final weeks, protect sleep and recovery, practise the correct sequence, and keep logistics separate from doctrine. Confirm the administration, application status and accommodations. Make the last review useful: concise rule retrieval, error-log patterns and a small number of realistic exercises. Reading more pages without applying the material does not show whether you can perform the task.
Common questions
How long should I study for the California Bar?
The time needed depends on background, schedule and diagnostic performance. Build a sustainable plan with practice in essays, PT and MBE.
Should I focus mostly on MBE questions?
No. The current exam gives equal weight to written and MBE portions, so essay and PT practice both matter.
Can I use this plan for the July 2028 exam?
Use the NextGen blueprint for July 2028. The current essay, PT and MBE structure does not apply to that administration.
