The short answer: change the appointment with Pearson VUE
Your Life Agent exam reservation is managed by Pearson VUE. TDI issues licenses, but it does not move a test-center seat in Pearson’s scheduling system. Sign in to the Pearson account that contains the InsTX-Life01 reservation, open the appointment, and use the change or cancellation controls shown there. If the system will not let you complete the change, contact Pearson VUE before the appointment rather than assuming the booking has changed.
The handbook’s written policy says candidates should call Pearson VUE at least 48 hours before the examination to change or cancel. When a candidate gives proper notice, the handbook says the examination fee may be transferred to a new reservation or a refund may be requested. Without proper notice, the fee is forfeited. Because vendor policies and online workflows can change, confirm the current deadline and available refund choice in the live Pearson account or with customer service before you rely on an older copy of the handbook.
This is about an existing appointment. It is different from booking the exam for the first time, retaking it after a failed result, or applying for a Texas license after you pass. Those steps happen in different systems and have different deadlines.
Check the exam code before you change anything
Confirm that the appointment is for the standalone English Texas Life Agent exam, code InsTX-Life01. Texas also offers a broader General Lines - Life, Accident and Health exam under a different code. If you booked the wrong exam, do not simply move the date and hope the correct test follows; change or cancel the incorrect reservation and create a reservation for the exact exam you intend to take. Compare the code in Pearson’s confirmation with the Texas Life Agent exam format before you pay again.
The code matters because the exams are not interchangeable. The combined Life, Accident and Health exam includes material outside the standalone Life Agent outline. A preparation course, confirmation email, voucher, or calendar event with a similar title can hide the difference. The code is the fastest reliable check. If it does not match, contact Pearson VUE while the reservation is still active and ask what options are available.
What the 48-hour rule means for your fee
The current candidate handbook describes a notice period, not a casual grace period. It tells candidates to call at least 48 hours before the exam to change or cancel. If you make a timely change, the handbook allows a fee transfer to a new reservation or a refund request. If you contact Pearson after the allowed window, you risk losing the fee even when you do not sit the exam. Pearson’s system may calculate the deadline from the appointment time, so do not wait until the final day to investigate.
| Situation | Likely consequence under the handbook | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| You need a different date and have enough notice | A timely change can transfer the fee to a new reservation | Sign in and change the appointment; save the new confirmation |
| You no longer plan to sit | A timely cancellation can allow a refund request | Cancel through Pearson and keep the cancellation record |
| You miss the notice deadline | The examination fee may be forfeited | Contact Pearson anyway and ask whether an exception applies; do not assume one |
| You booked a different exam code | The reservation remains for the wrong examination until corrected | Ask Pearson to cancel or change it, then verify the replacement code |
| Pearson cancels because of severe weather or an unsafe center | Pearson says affected candidates will be notified and rescheduled | Use the notice from Pearson and confirm the replacement appointment |
The phrase ‘may request a refund’ does not mean every payment method is refunded identically or instantly. The handbook says credit- and debit-card refunds are immediate, but account screens and payment circumstances can differ. A voucher may follow voucher terms. Read the confirmation displayed for your transaction and ask Pearson how the refund or transfer will be recorded before you make another payment.
How to change a Pearson VUE appointment
- Find your original Pearson VUE confirmation email and open the same account used to book. Check that your legal name and appointment details are correct.
- Open the exam appointment and select the option to reschedule or cancel. If the option is unavailable or the site displays an error, contact Pearson VUE customer service promptly.
- For a reschedule, choose an available test center and date, then review the exam name, InsTX-Life01 code, location, time, and any displayed charge or credit before submitting.
- For a cancellation, read the final screen carefully. It should state whether the appointment has been canceled and whether a refund or fee transfer has been initiated.
- Save the confirmation number, email, and any refund or voucher details. Remove the old calendar entry only after you have a clear cancellation or replacement confirmation.
Do not treat a calendar edit as a Pearson change. Your personal calendar has no effect on the seat reservation. Likewise, an email draft to Pearson, an unanswered support request, or a screenshot of the booking page is not proof that the vendor processed a change. Wait for the confirmation that reflects the new date or cancellation, and check your account again if the details conflict.
If you are sick, delayed, or cannot reach the test center
Act before the scheduled time whenever you can. The handbook separates a planned change from an absence or late arrival. If an unexpected event prevents you from testing, Pearson’s handbook allows candidates to contact Pearson within 14 days after the exam date to request an excused absence for listed reasons. Those reasons include illness affecting the candidate or an immediate family member, a death in the immediate family, a disabling traffic accident, court or jury duty, military duty, or a weather emergency. Pearson assigns a case number and gives instructions for sending supporting documents.
That post-appointment request is not automatic approval and it is not a substitute for timely cancellation. The handbook warns that a candidate who is late or absent without changing or canceling under the policy may not be admitted and may forfeit the fee. If a qualifying emergency arises, contact Pearson as soon as possible, explain the situation plainly, obtain the case number, and follow the instructions for documentation. Keep copies of what you send.
For severe weather or a natural disaster that makes the center unsafe or inaccessible, Pearson says the exam may be delayed or canceled and affected candidates will be notified and rescheduled. Watch the email and contact information attached to your account. Do not travel based on an old confirmation if Pearson has sent a newer closure notice.
Rescheduling is not the same as a retake
A reschedule changes an appointment you already booked. A retake is a new examination reservation after you have sat the exam and received a failing result. A cancellation ends the appointment, subject to the fee rules. These are three different events. If you did not attend, ask Pearson how it has coded the appointment before buying another seat; do not assume a no-show is a free reschedule or a retake with a new result.
If you sat the exam and did not pass, read the score report and the current retake instructions before choosing another date. Your learning plan may need to change, but the appointment still has to be made through Pearson VUE. The Texas Life Agent retake guide covers the next-attempt decision separately.
| Term | What changes | Who handles it |
|---|---|---|
| Reschedule | The date or time of an existing reservation | Pearson VUE |
| Cancel | The existing reservation ends; refund or transfer depends on the policy | Pearson VUE |
| Retake | A new exam attempt follows a failed result | Pearson VUE booking, after reviewing the result |
| License application | TDI evaluates whether to issue the license | TDI through its licensing application route |
If you need an accommodation
Do not book a standard appointment and assume a later date change will add an accommodation. Pearson’s handbook says the steps depend on the program sponsor and instructs candidates to request accommodations through Pearson’s accommodations process. For the Texas program, use Pearson’s current test-accommodation page and wait for the decision or scheduling instructions it gives you. The handbook says candidates requesting extra time for English as a second language should not make an exam reservation until Pearson has notified them that the request is approved.
If an approved accommodation changes the appointment or requires a special session, follow the instructions in Pearson’s approval notice. If you already booked a standard sitting, contact Pearson rather than cancelling on your own without checking how the approved arrangement should be scheduled. Keep the approval communication with your appointment confirmation.
Keep the licensing deadline separate from the exam appointment
Changing the exam date does not itself start or extend a license-application deadline. The one-year filing period begins after passing the exam, not when you first reserve a seat. If you reschedule because you need more study time, keep a realistic plan and confirm the new date in Pearson’s system. If you have already passed, the relevant next task is the TDI application, not a new exam booking unless you need to retake.
Also keep the booking information consistent with your licensing record. Pearson warns candidates to use their legal name and accurate personal details. If you notice an error, contact customer service to correct it before testing. A name mismatch can create avoidable problems with your score report or later application. Do not wait until check-in to raise an account correction.
A quick decision checklist
- Do I have the correct standalone Life Agent exam code, InsTX-Life01?
- Have I checked the appointment time and the current change/cancel deadline in Pearson’s account?
- If I need a new date, is there an available appointment that still fits my study plan?
- If I cancel, does Pearson show a refund, transfer, or fee-loss outcome before I confirm?
- If illness or an emergency caused the problem, have I contacted Pearson and saved its case number?
- If I requested an accommodation, am I following the specific approval and booking instructions?
- Do I have the final confirmation email for the changed or canceled reservation?
The practical rule is simple: let Pearson VUE confirm the change. Use the official account, act early, and keep the transaction record. If you still plan to sit, choose a date you can protect rather than moving the appointment repeatedly without a study reason. When you are ready to prepare for the updated Life Agent outline, see the Texas Life Agent exam course.
Common questions
How do I reschedule the Texas Life Agent exam?
Sign in to the Pearson VUE account that holds your InsTX-Life01 appointment and use its rescheduling option. The current handbook says to contact Pearson at least 48 hours before the exam. Confirm the replacement date and exam code, then save the updated confirmation.
Can I get a refund if I cancel?
The handbook says candidates who change or cancel with proper notice may transfer the fee or request a refund. It warns that candidates who act without proper notice forfeit the exam fee. Check the live Pearson VUE account for the transaction-specific outcome before confirming.
What if I miss the exam because I am sick?
Contact Pearson VUE as soon as possible. The handbook allows a request for an excused absence within 14 days for certain listed events, including illness, but approval is not automatic. Ask for a case number and follow Pearson’s instructions for supporting documents.
Does changing the date change my exam code?
No. A date change keeps the examination attached to the reservation unless you explicitly change the exam. Verify that the appointment still says Texas Life Agent, code InsTX-Life01, before submitting and again in the confirmation email.
Should I cancel if I need test accommodations?
First read Pearson’s current accommodation decision and scheduling instructions. The handbook says the steps depend on the test program and tells ESL candidates to wait for approval before reserving. Contact Pearson to coordinate an existing appointment instead of assuming a normal cancellation is required.
