No course is required to pass. A PTCB-Recognized Education/Training Program is required only if you cannot use the 500-hour work experience eligibility route.

For eligibility
Only if you cannot document 500 hours of equivalent work experience with a supervisor attestation. A working technician often can.
And note that only a PTCB-Recognized Education/Training Program satisfies this. An exam prep course is a different product.
For passing
Nothing is required. The content outline is free, the federal regulations behind Federal Requirements are free, and a question bank is the only purchase most candidates need.
For someone who will not otherwise build an eight-week plan and stick to it, that is worth paying for. For someone who will, it is an expensive way to buy a schedule. Answer that honestly and the decision makes itself.

- The federal regulations, for the Federal Requirements domain
- A question bank weighted to the 2026 outline
- Two full-length timed papers
- Ten minutes of conversions daily
When a course is the wrong purchase
When you failed on pace. More teaching does not fix a timing problem, and that is the most common misdiagnosis after a first attempt.
What to buy instead, if anything
A question bank weighted to the outline effective 6 January 2026, and access to two full-length timed papers on questions you have not worked before. Between them they cover practice, pace and diagnosis, which is what a course would have supplied at several times the price.
Everything else on the list is free. The content outline is published by PTCB and the federal regulations behind 15 of the 80 scored questions are public.
The one case where a course is not optional
Eligibility. If you cannot document 500 hours of work experience with a supervisor attestation, you need a PTCB-Recognized Education/Training Program, and no amount of self-study substitutes for it.
Check PTCB’s own list before paying, because an exam prep course is a different product and will not satisfy the requirement.
