What to Bring to the PTCB Exam
For the PTCE, bring a valid original government-issued photo ID with a signature and check that its name matches your PTCB Account under PTCB’s published rules.
- Arrive at the Pearson VUE center 30 minutes early.
- Leave personal study materials and your own calculator outside the testing room.

The PTCE is currently administered in person at a Pearson VUE test center. Your ID and your appointment details are the two things to check before leaving home. A bag full of notes or a familiar calculator will not help at the desk: Pearson VUE keeps personal items out of the testing room, and PTCB does not allow a personal calculator.
The short packing list
- Your original, unexpired, government-issued photo ID with a signature. Check the full ID rules before choosing a document.
- A second original ID with your first and last name and signature if your primary approved ID has no signature.
- Your appointment information so you can confirm the test center address, date and arrival time.
- Any documentation or approved comfort aid that applies to your individual situation under PTCB and Pearson VUE rules.
PTCB lists a passport or passport card, government-issued driver’s license or learner’s permit, government ID card, military ID, permanent resident card, and Department of Homeland Security employment authorization card as examples of approved primary IDs for test-center candidates. The primary ID must be an original document. A photocopy or digital copy will not replace it. If the primary ID lacks a signature, PTCB requires a second valid original document bearing your first and last name and signature; it gives a credit card, debit card, or employee or school ID as examples.
A document can look official yet fail a particular requirement. Check whether the photograph is recognizable, the document is current, and the signature rule is met. PTCB has a limited renewal-receipt exception for an expired driver’s license and a separate rule for temporary licenses. Read those conditions in the candidate guidebook rather than treating every expired or temporary document as acceptable.
Compare your ID with your PTCB Account
PTCB says the name on your ID must match the name in your PTCB Account, subject to published exceptions. For example, its test-center policy can disregard a hyphen in a surname, accept certain dual-surname arrangements, and accept some initials or reversed first-and-last-name orders. A nickname or unrelated surname is not automatically covered by those examples. These exceptions are precise enough that it is risky to rely on a vague idea that “close enough” will pass.
Open your account and compare the first and last names with the ID you will carry. If the difference fits one of PTCB’s listed examples, read the whole example and bring the documents it requires. If it does not, request a correction through your PTCB Account before your appointment. A legal name change calls for documentation such as a marriage license or divorce decree; another inaccuracy such as a misspelling calls for a government-issued photo ID. PTCB says the supporting documentation must reach it at least ten business days before a scheduled exam.
PTCB says a candidate whose name on file does not match the ID under its rules may be denied admission and forfeit the fee. Its guidebook tells candidates who cannot meet the documentation deadline to withdraw their application. Check the withdrawal and appointment-cancellation steps before acting; a test-center clerk cannot change the name in your PTCB Account.
Arrive early and bring only what you need
PTCB instructs PTCE candidates to arrive at the designated Pearson VUE test center 30 minutes before the appointment. That time is for check-in, not extra exam time. Confirm the address in the appointment confirmation and allow for the ordinary things that can delay you: traffic, parking, a different entrance, or a building with several suites. A screenshot of the address can help you navigate, but your phone will have to be stored before you enter the testing room.
Pearson VUE’s professional and regulatory rules keep phones, watches, bags, wallets, books, notes, pens, and pencils out of the testing room. Follow the test administrator’s directions for storing personal belongings, or leave unnecessary items elsewhere. Do not count on being able to reach a phone or notes during the exam. The test center is not responsible for lost or misplaced belongings, so traveling light is sensible.
A smartwatch is still a watch and an electronic device under the personal-items rule. Silence and store it rather than expecting to wear it while testing. A regular watch is also on the prohibited list. You will see the exam’s timer on the computer; there is no reason to carry a separate timepiece into the room.
Calculator and note materials
The PTCB exam includes a built-in calculator. PTCB prohibits personal calculators under any circumstance. At a test center, you may request a hand-held calculator if one is available; it is a center-provided option, not something to bring or rely on. Practice calculations using the on-screen calculator so the exam interface feels familiar. If you prefer a hand-held device, ask the test administrator and be prepared to use the built-in tool if none is available.
Do not bring scratch paper, a notebook, or your own pen into the testing room. Pearson VUE says the test administrator provides any note or calculation materials authorized by the exam sponsor, such as a laminated noteboard. The administrator collects those materials afterward. You may not begin writing on a noteboard before the test starts or take it out of the room. If the materials run out, raise your hand to request what the rules permit.
Comfort aids and accommodations
“Bring nothing” is too blunt for candidates who need a permitted comfort aid. PTCB points to Pearson VUE’s comfort-aid list. Listed items do not require advance approval and can enter after a visual inspection by test-center staff. Check the list for the specific item you need before your appointment. A request for a testing accommodation is a different process: PTCB says candidates request it during the application process and submit the required documentation. Approved candidates must use the accommodation-specific Pearson VUE scheduling route so the support is available at the appointment.
Do not infer permission for an item because it seems medically useful or harmless. Some aids are routinely allowed after inspection, while others require a formal accommodation. The current PTCB and Pearson VUE rules decide which process applies. If you have an approved accommodation, bring and use it according to the approval and appointment instructions.
A practical check the night before
- Open your PTCB Account and appointment confirmation. Confirm the name, center address, date and check-in time.
- Choose an original approved ID, check its expiration date, photograph and signature, and compare the name under PTCB’s stated exceptions.
- Set aside any required second ID or name-change documentation. If there is an unresolved mismatch, contact PTCB before traveling.
- Decide where you will store your phone, watch and bag. Leave study materials and your personal calculator out of the testing-room plan.
- Review any comfort-aid or accommodation instructions that apply to you, then plan to arrive 30 minutes early.
This checklist is preparation for check-in, not a substitute for the current candidate rules. PTCB’s exam-day guidebook controls ID, calculators and comfort aids; Pearson VUE’s candidate rules control the testing room. Read the linked originals shortly before your date, especially if your ID or accommodation situation is unusual.
Common questions
What should I bring to the PTCB exam?
Bring an original, unexpired, government-issued photo ID with a signature that meets PTCB’s name-match rules. Bring a second qualifying original ID if your primary approved ID lacks a signature. Keep your appointment information handy and arrive at the Pearson VUE center 30 minutes early.
Does the name on my ID have to match exactly?
PTCB requires a match but lists narrow test-center exceptions for certain hyphens, dual surnames, initials and name order. Review the exact examples in its Exam Day guidebook. Submit a genuine name correction or legal name-change documents through your PTCB Account ahead of the appointment.
Can I bring my own calculator?
No. PTCB provides a built-in calculator and prohibits personal calculators. A hand-held calculator can be requested at a test center only if one is available.
Can I bring scratch paper?
Do not bring your own paper or writing tools into the testing room. Pearson VUE provides any note materials authorized by the exam sponsor and collects them when you finish.
Can I wear a smartwatch?
No. Watches and electronic devices are personal items prohibited from the testing room. Follow the test administrator’s storage instructions.
Is the PTCE online or at a test center?
PTCB’s current CPhT page says the PTCE is administered in person at Pearson VUE test centers. Follow the venue and appointment details shown when you schedule.
