Tab by category weight, working from the biggest first. Tabs must reach provisions rather than chapters, and every tab should be one you have used at least once in practice.
If you do one thing to prepare for this exam, do this. It is worth more than any course.
Work in weight order
Procurement and Contracting is 31 questions and General Requirements is 25. The business and law reference and the OSHA standards get tabbed first and most finely.
Electrical is 3 questions. Tab it last and lightly.
How fine
Fine enough to land on a provision, not a chapter. A tab reading "Fall protection" puts you in twenty pages. A tab reading "Guardrail specs 1926.502(b)" puts you on the answer.
That means a lot of tabs. Several hundred across the set is normal.
The point of tabbing is not a colourful book. It is a retrieval system you have rehearsed. Every tab should correspond to something you have actually looked up while practicing, or you will not remember it exists under pressure.
A method that works
- Work practice questions with the book open and untabbed
- Every time you look something up, tab where you landed
- Label the tab with what you were looking for, in your words
- Repeat until new questions stop generating new tabs
- Then work timed sets to rehearse using them
That builds an index shaped by the questions rather than by the book's own structure, which is the difference between a useful index and a table of contents on sticky paper.
Color by book
One color per reference, so you reach for the right book without reading anything. With two dozen books on a table, that saves seconds on every lookup.
Check the rules
Permanent index tabs and highlighting are permitted. Anything beyond that, verify against the current bulletin before exam day rather than at the door.
