An approved NASCLA application lasts 12 months and allows up to three attempts. Booking late in the window means a failed attempt may leave no time for another inside it.

What the window is
Twelve months from the date your application was approved. Inside it you may take the examination up to three times.
Each attempt costs the USD 130 PSI fee. The USD 65 application fee covers the window rather than the attempt.
The planning mistake
Applying, then spending eight months preparing, then booking in month ten.
Fail that attempt and you have two months for a retake, including the time to work out what went wrong and fix it. Fail again and the window closes with an attempt unused and a new application fee due. Apply late, sit early.
Nothing requires you to apply before you start studying. Buy the books, tab them, work practice questions, and apply when you are close. The window then covers the period when you are actually sitting.

You apply again and pay the application fee again. Nothing carries over except your knowledge.
