Our full-fat budget is 90 hours from no background: 60 across the nine topics, 15 on timed mocks, 15 on targeted repair. With finance or compliance experience, 40 to 60 hours is realistic. HKSI publishes no recommended study time, so this is our estimate rather than guidance.
The question behind the question is usually "can I fit this into the time I have". So here is an actual budget rather than a range, built from parts of the syllabus you can see for yourself, with the reasoning exposed so you can cut it to fit.
It comes to 90 hours for someone starting cold. That is our number and nobody else's - HKSI publishes the syllabus, the format and the pass rates, and publishes no recommended study time at all.

Sixty hours on the topics, thirty on testing yourself. If you have to cut, cut reading hours and protect the mocks. That is not the instinctive choice and it is the right one.
What is this estimate actually based on?
Three visible things, and no private data.
The syllabus has nine topics and 66 second-level headings, and the hours above track roughly how those headings are distributed rather than how important each topic feels. The estimate also accounts for how long it takes to read the Parts of the Ordinance that matter - Topic 3 sends you into the legislation itself, which goes at perhaps a third of the speed of a study text. And the 70% pass mark means the closing stretch has to be practice, because you need dependable accuracy at 42 out of 60 rather than a general sense of the material.
HKSI does not publish a recommended study time, a per-topic question breakdown, or any candidate-level statistics. Our hour budget is derived from the visible size of the syllabus and how long the source reading takes. Treat it as a planning tool you are free to argue with.

A third reading, two thirds testing and fixing. Most candidates run at something closer to three-quarters reading, which is the most common preparation error described to us and the easiest one to correct.
How to fit 90 hours into a working life
- Twelve hours a week for eight weeks. Two weekday evenings and most of a weekend day. This is the version we would pick.
- Fifteen hours a week for six weeks. Workable if your job is predictable and you start with Topic 3.
- Twenty-four hours a week for four weeks. Tight but real, and the usual shape for someone with a licensing deadline.
- Five hours a week for eighteen weeks. Technically the same total, and it usually fails - long runways lose people to attrition rather than to difficulty.
Our opinion: the weekly figure matters more than the total. Momentum on this material is worth several hours of raw study time, because everything in Topic 4 attaches to something in Topic 3, and a fortnight's gap between them costs you the connection.
Can you do it in fewer hours?
Yes, if you already work at a licensed corporation. Topics 1, 5 and 6 are your working environment, which realistically takes 30 hours off the total and lands you at the top of the 40-to-60 band. Yes again if you sat Paper 1 before and missed narrowly, in which case you are repairing two or three topics rather than building nine from scratch.
The concession: some people pass on 30 hours flat. We have no idea how many, and neither does anyone else, because no candidate-level data is published - HKSI releases pass rates and nothing behind them. Building your plan around the fastest case anyone has reported is a way of finding out whether you were that person, at HKD 1,800 a go.

We budget 16 hours, more than any other topic, because Topic 3 covers the Securities and Futures Ordinance Part by Part and legislation reads slowly. Spend the first few of those hours building a map of the Parts before reading any of them closely.
Is 40 hours enough for HKSI Paper 1?
It can be if you already work at a licensed corporation and know the Code of Conduct and internal control requirements from daily use. From a genuine standing start, 40 hours leaves you relying on question practice to carry topics you have only skimmed.
How many hours a week should I study?
Around twelve hours a week over eight weeks is the shape we would choose. It leaves slack for the week work goes wrong, and it keeps the gap between related topics short enough that Topic 4 still connects to Topic 3 in your head.
Should I count practice questions as study hours?
Yes, and they should be the larger half of your total. Reading produces familiarity; questions produce the ability to separate four plausible options, which is what the paper tests. Check every wrong answer against the source rather than against memory.
