The three-year line
The SFC may recognise a paper passed more than three years ago where you are, or have been, licensed within the past three years for a relevant activity.
Read that backwards and the rule is clear. A break of more than three years removes the protection, and the paper comes back into scope.
Maternity or paternity leave, a secondment, a year out - these sit inside the window and the carve-out is designed for exactly that. The problems start at the point where you have been out longer than you were recently in.
Your register entry
A licence tied to a sponsoring corporation does not persist after you leave. The public register will show what you were, not what you are.
That is not a black mark and it is worth knowing before an interviewer looks you up.
CPT during the gap
The obligation attaches to being licensed, so an unlicensed year is not a year of accrued shortfall. When you are licensed again the ethics rule for a person first becoming licensed may be relevant depending on your circumstances, and it is worth asking your new firm's compliance team rather than assuming.
What to do, in order
- Work out the exact date you were last licensed, not the date you last worked
- Measure the gap against three years
- If you are outside it, plan on sitting Paper 1 again and treat that as ordinary rather than a setback
- Line up the sponsoring corporation early, because the application is theirs to make
- Ask about the firm's CPT programme in the offer conversation
Re-sitting is not starting over
A returner sits the same 60 questions in 90 minutes as everyone else, with a working knowledge of the industry that a first-timer does not have.
The syllabus moves, though. Check the current version rather than studying from the manual you kept.
