What the FTCE essay prompt looks like, and what we can source

That is the whole documentary record we hold on this subtest. Four sources, and none of them contains a prompt.

What the skills imply about the task

The skills are written in the language of argument, not narrative. You formulate a relevant thesis or claim, organize ideas, provide adequate relevant support, and write a conclusion that follows from or supports the argument or information presented.

One skill says to cite ample textual evidence, and adds that a response may also include anecdotal experience for added support. Read literally, that suggests the task gives you something to work from and treats personal experience as a supplement rather than the main material.

The first skill says to determine the purpose of writing to task and audience, which is a strong hint that the prompt names an audience or a situation rather than simply offering a topic.

What we deliberately are not telling you

The Test Information Guides carry sample prompts and the score-point descriptors raters work to. They are published on the testing vendor's site, which blocks automated access, and they are the vendor's copyright.

• We do not reproduce them
• We do not paraphrase them and present the paraphrase as the marking scheme

You can go and look at them yourself, and you should. Our position is that a site claiming to know what a prompt says should be able to say where it got that, and most of the ones you will find cannot.

How to prepare without a sample prompt

Practice the eleven skills rather than a topic. The skills are the constant and the prompt is the variable, and a piece of writing that hits all eleven will do so on any subject.

1. Take any contested question from a newspaper editorial page
2. Give yourself 50 minutes and a blank screen
3. Write a response with a thesis, organized support, transitions and a conclusion
4. Then read your own piece against the eleven skills and mark which ones are visible

Step four is what works, and nobody does it. Reading your own writing against a checklist is uncomfortable. It is also the only feedback available to you for nothing.

Where our product stops

We teach this subtest in a chapter of its own and we do not mark essays. If you want a human being to read what you wrote and tell you whether it would score a 3, that is a service several competitors sell and we do not.

It is the honest gap in what we offer. It matters most for a candidate who has already failed 825 once, because at that point self-assessment has demonstrably not been enough.

The number that should calm you down

Sixty-four percent of first-attempt candidates passed the essay in 2025 and 79% at best attempt. That 15-point climb is the joint largest of the four subtests. Whatever the prompt turns out to be, people who come back and prepare properly mostly get through it.
