Using an SAT score instead of the General Knowledge Test
SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing at 560 satisfies three of the four General Knowledge subtests, and SAT Mathematics at 540 satisfies the fourth. Two section scores from one test date can clear the entire requirement. The administration must be on or after 1 March 2016.
Of the four alternative tests the rule accepts, the SAT is the one worth checking first, because it is the one most Florida candidates have already taken and because of how the scores map. Two numbers on one score report cover the whole requirement.
The full alternative-score table covers all four tests side by side. This page is only about the SAT and about what actually happens when you try to use one.
The two numbers
| General Knowledge subtest | SAT section | Minimum score |
|---|---|---|
| Essay (825) | Evidence-Based Reading & Writing | 560 |
| English Language Skills (826) | Evidence-Based Reading & Writing | 560 |
| Reading (827) | Evidence-Based Reading & Writing | 560 |
| Mathematics (828) | Mathematics | 540 |
Transcribed from Rule 6A-4.0021(12). Notice that Evidence-Based Reading and Writing appears three times. One section score at 560 removes the essay, English Language Skills and Reading in a single stroke, which is why the SAT is the best-value alternative in the rule and why it is the first thing to look for in a drawer.
Where to find the number on your report
You are looking for section scores, not the total. A College Board score report gives a composite built from two section scores: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, and Mathematics. Those two section scores are what the rule reads. Your composite is irrelevant to Florida.
This trips people up in one specific way. A candidate with a strong total but a lopsided profile can clear Mathematics comfortably and miss Evidence-Based Reading and Writing by a handful of points, and the total tells them nothing about that. Read the two numbers separately, the way the rule does.
The rule accepts SAT administrations conducted on or after 1 March 2016. A score from an earlier sitting does not qualify at any level. There is a second date condition as well: the minimum required score must have been earned during the ten years immediately preceding application and qualification for a certificate, unless law or rule says otherwise. Both conditions have to hold.
How to send it
Score reports go to the Bureau of Educator Certification as part of your certification file, not to Pearson and not to the FTCE registration site. The examination vendor has no interest in your SAT; the Department does. Request an official report from College Board and let the Bureau rule on it.
And wait for that ruling before you cancel anything. Rule 6A-4.0021(12) sets minimum scores that may be used to satisfy the requirement, and the Department decides whether a particular score qualifies in a particular file. A refund on a Florida examination fee needs a written request at least 24 hours before the examination date, so leave yourself room.
What if you are a few points short
There is no partial credit and no rounding. Ten points below the line covers nothing at all; 560 covers three subtests. That cliff is the harshest thing in the whole provision.
Which raises the obvious question: would retaking the SAT be easier than sitting the FTCE subtests? Our answer is usually no, and here is the reasoning. The SAT is a longer sitting, it is scheduled on national test dates rather than on demand, and clearing 560 on Evidence-Based Reading and Writing is a harder target than clearing a scaled 200 on English Language Skills, where FLDOE publishes the passing standard as at most 63% correct. A General Knowledge subtest costs USD 32.50, can be booked when you want it, and gives a multiple-choice result at the center the same day.
The exception is a candidate who is short on one section and would need three FTCE subtests to cover the gap. Retaking the SAT once to clear 560 replaces three registrations and three preparations, and at that point the arithmetic changes. That is a narrow case and most people are not in it.
The partial-cover case
Mixing is allowed. Passing scores are required in each content area, and the rule works content area by content area, so an SAT Mathematics score of 540 with Evidence-Based Reading and Writing below 560 exempts Mathematics and leaves you registering for three subtests at USD 97.50 rather than USD 130 for the full battery.
Worth saying plainly, because it cuts against our own interest: if your SAT covers everything, do not buy preparation from anyone. Send the report and be done. We would rather publish that than have you find it out after paying.
Common questions
What SAT score exempts you from the FTCE General Knowledge Test?
Evidence-Based Reading and Writing at 560 satisfies the essay, English Language Skills and Reading subtests. Mathematics at 540 satisfies the Mathematics subtest. Both are minimum scores under Rule 6A-4.0021(12) and the administration must be on or after 1 March 2016.
Does my SAT total matter?
No. The rule reads section scores, not composites. A high total with one weak section can still fail to cover the subtests attached to that section, so look at Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and Mathematics separately rather than at the headline figure.
Where do I send my SAT score report?
To the Bureau of Educator Certification as part of your certification file. The FTCE registration site and Pearson have no role in it. Request an official report from College Board and wait for the Department's decision before canceling a booked examination.
My score is 10 points short. Is there any flexibility?
No. The rule states minimum required scores and there is no partial credit or rounding. Evidence-Based Reading and Writing ten points below the line covers nothing, and at 560 covers three subtests. If you are short, the FTCE subtest is usually the cheaper way through.
Should I retake the SAT instead of sitting the FTCE?
Usually not. FTCE subtests cost USD 32.50 each, are booked on demand and give a same-day multiple-choice result. Retaking the SAT only makes sense if one section score would replace three subtests and you are close to the threshold already.
