Less hard than its reputation. 71% of candidates passed Mathematics at the first attempt in 2025, above English Language Skills at 68% and below Reading at 78%. It passes at a scaled 200, published as at most 63% correct, and it gives you 100 minutes for 35 questions.
Mathematics is the subtest candidates fear and it is not the one that fails most of them. The published rates say so.

Two things make it easier than it looks
The cut and the clock. Mathematics is published at the lower of the two percentages, at most 63% rather than Reading's 70%, or at most 22 of 35 by our own arithmetic. And it gives you 100 minutes for 35 questions, about 2.86 minutes each, which is more than twice the per-question time in English Language Skills.
You can afford to work a problem out. On the language subtests you often cannot.
What makes it hard for the people it beats
Distance. This is the subtest where a candidate who last saw algebra a decade ago is genuinely starting again, and no amount of clever technique substitutes for rebuilding that. The four competencies cover number sense, geometry and measurement, algebraic thinking and the coordinate plane, and probability, statistics and data interpretation.
An on-screen calculator and a mathematics reference sheet are supplied, per the FTCE Test Structure document. Neither is yours and neither replaces knowing what to do. We have not read the reference sheet, since it is on the vendor's site, so we do not tell you what is on it.
Our honest read
If you have a math background, Mathematics is your easiest subtest and English Language Skills is the one to plan around. If you do not, Mathematics deserves most of your study time and it is still not the hardest thing on this test: the essay has the lowest published first-attempt rate at 64%, and it is the one nobody drills.
The published rates tell us who passed and nothing about why, so the reasoning above is ours from the numbers rather than anything FLDOE states.

What math is on the FTCE General Knowledge Test?
