How to Register for the FTCE General Knowledge Test

Before you register

First confirm that you need the exam. Florida accepts certain alternative test scores for specified General Knowledge requirements. Check the current Florida rule and the official alternatives information before paying; an accepted score may cover one or more subtests.

The General Knowledge Test has four separately registered and passed subtests: Essay, English Language Skills, Reading and Mathematics. There is no prerequisite for the exam itself. Teacher-preparation enrollment and educator-certificate requirements are separate questions, so exam registration alone does not establish eligibility for a Florida teaching certificate.

Registration steps

1. Sign in or create an account at the official FTCE/FELE testing site.
2. Select the General Knowledge subtest or subtests you have not already satisfied.
3. Review the fee shown for your selection and confirm your registration details.
4. Submit registration and payment through the official site.
5. Follow the account instructions to book an available Pearson appointment and keep the confirmation.

The published fee schedule scales by the number of subtests, so choosing them separately does not lower the total fee for all four. You can register only for the subtests you need. A passed subtest cannot be retaken; if you fail one, Florida's rule requires a new registration for that failed subtest after the required waiting period.

Appointment booking

Registration and appointment booking are separate steps. The test is available year-round by appointment, subject to open seats. Do not assume that payment itself reserves a seat; use the instructions in your FTCE account to choose a Pearson appointment.

A candidate has one year from registration to book. Check the deadline shown in your account and current official instructions instead of relying on a date calculated from a third-party article. Appointment availability varies, so review the Pearson schedule as soon as you know which subtests you will take.

Multiple subtests

If you register for more than one subtest, decide whether to sit them together or split them into separate appointments. Consider the time commitment, your readiness in each area and the cost of returning for a second appointment. Even when taken in one appointment, subtests are reported and passed separately.

After registration

• Save the confirmation and verify the subtest names on your account.
• Check the appointment location, arrival instructions, identification and accommodation details in the official candidate materials.
• If you need to move an appointment, use the current official rescheduling process and deadlines.
• After testing, follow the account instructions to view results and register for a retake only if needed.
