You can register and sit the General Knowledge Test today: there is no prerequisite of any kind. A passing subtest score does not expire and each subtest costs USD 32.50 whether you take one or all four, so the test can be cleared one piece at a time over years without penalty.
You already work in a school. You already know what the job is, which puts you ahead of almost everyone else reading a page like this. What you probably don't have is a free run at four subtests, and that is the part worth planning properly.
What we hold, and what we don't
We hold the Florida Department of Education's examination documents: Rule 6A-4.0021, the competencies it incorporates, the test structure, the pass-mark table and the 2025 annual administration report. We hold nothing at all on paraprofessional requirements in Florida, on district para-to-teacher programs, or on any credit your current role might earn against a certification route.
So this page is about the examination and stops there. For the rest, your district's HR office and the department's certification office are the two places worth an email, and both answers are worth having in writing.
This test is unusually well suited to being cleared slowly
Most examinations punish you for taking your time. This one doesn't, and the reason is a combination of three rules that nobody sets out together.

Read those together and the shape of a workable plan appears on its own. One subtest a term, paid for as you go, prepared for one at a time in whatever evenings you have. A candidate who takes three years pays USD 130, the same as a candidate who takes one afternoon.
The only thing that costs extra is failing. A retake is a fresh single-subtest registration at USD 32.50 and waits at least 30 days from the previous administration of that subtest.
None of your classroom experience is on the test
This is worth saying plainly because it cuts both ways. The General Knowledge Test covers ten competencies and 57 skills across English Language Skills, Reading and Mathematics, plus one competency and 11 skills for the essay. Language structure, vocabulary application, standard English conventions. Key ideas, craft and structure, integration of information. Number sense, geometry, algebra, probability and statistics.
Not one competency is about children, classrooms or instruction. Years of supporting a teacher will not lift your Mathematics score by a single question, and the full breakdown of that gap is on what the General Knowledge Test does not test.
Which is not a flattering thing to say about the examination. The one qualification you have that most candidates don't is the one it is completely blind to. It measures whether you can read a passage and solve a linear equation, and it will tell a district nothing about whether you can hold a room.
Check whether you have to sit it at all
Rule 6A-4.0021(12) accepts qualifying GRE, SAT, ACT and CLT scores against the general knowledge requirement, subtest by subtest. One SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score of 560 covers three of the four subtests, and a Mathematics score of 540 covers the fourth.
The dates decide it. GRE administrations count from 1 July 2015, and SAT, ACT and CLT administrations from 1 March 2016. Dig out the score report before you register for anything, and the full table is on our page about the alternative score routes.

If you are building confidence, Reading first is the defensible choice on the published rates. If you are working to a deadline, the essay first is the better one, because it is the only subtest not scored at the test center and it takes about four weeks to come back.
The pay question
You are almost certainly weighing this against what you earn now, and we cannot help. We hold no salary data for Florida teachers and none for paraprofessionals, so there is no earnings comparison on this site and there is not going to be one. Your district publishes salary schedules for both roles. Those two public documents answer the question exactly, for you, in a way no statewide average would.
Common questions
Can a paraprofessional take the FTCE General Knowledge Test?
Yes. There is no prerequisite at all: no approved course, no degree and no supervised experience is required before you register and sit. What your current role counts for in the wider certification route is a question for the department's certification office rather than for us.
Can you take the four subtests over several years?
Yes, and it costs nothing extra. Each subtest is USD 32.50 whether you register for one or all four, a passing subtest score does not expire, and a passed subtest cannot be retaken. The only clock is one year from a registration to booking that appointment.
Does classroom experience help on the General Knowledge Test?
No. The ten competencies and 57 skills cover English Language Skills, Reading and Mathematics, with an eleventh set of skills for the essay. None of them concern children, instruction or classroom practice, so years of support work do not translate into marks here.
Which subtest should a paraprofessional sit first?
Reading had the highest published first-attempt pass rate in 2025 at 78%, so it is the confidence-building choice. If a deadline matters, sit the essay first instead: it is the only subtest not scored at the test center and takes about four weeks to be rated by two people.
What is the difference in pay between a paraprofessional and a teacher in Florida?
