  1. Set a timer for 150 minutes and do not stop it. Running over is the commonest way a prepared candidate fails, and the only place you can find that out safely is here.
  2. Mark one answer for each question on the answer sheet.
  3. Answer every question. There is no penalty for a wrong answer. A blank is a guaranteed zero and a guess is not.
  4. Flag anything you are unsure of as you go. When you mark the paper, a question you flagged and got right is worth as much of your attention as one you got wrong - you do not yet know it, you guessed it.
  5. When the timer runs out, turn to the Answers section at the back of this file. Mark the paper against the quick-reference key first, fill in the score table, and only then read the worked explanations.

Paper #2

130 questions. 150 minutes.

1

A client is choosing between a specified disease policy and a critical illness policy and wants the widest protection for a serious diagnosis. Which should the producer recommend, and why?

  1. AThe specified disease policy, because its benefits for the named disease are usually more generous
  2. BThe specified disease policy, because a critical illness policy pays only where death results
  3. CThe critical illness policy, because it responds to several named conditions rather than one
  4. DEither, because both respond to any life threatening diagnosis made while cover is in force
2

How does an accidental bodily injury standard differ from the older accidental means standard?

  1. AAccidental bodily injury requires the cause to be unintended, while accidental means looks only at the result
  2. BAccidental bodily injury covers sickness as well as injury, while accidental means covers injury alone
  3. CAccidental bodily injury applies to group contracts, while accidental means applies to individual ones
  4. DAccidental bodily injury looks only at the result, while accidental means requires the cause to be unintended too
3

A couple want coverage for an estate liability arising at the second death, but one of them is in poor health and cannot obtain individual coverage. What is the significance of a survivorship policy here?

  1. AThe premium is loaded to reflect the impairment, at the same rate as an individual policy
  2. BThe unhealthy life is excluded from the contract, which then covers the healthy life alone
  3. CThe healthier life can carry the underwriting, so the contract may still be issued
  4. DThe insurer must issue the contract without underwriting because two lives are involved

Worked explanations

The paper carries one for every question, at the back. These are the three above.

Q1 C Ch. 5: V. Types of policies (accident and health)

Answer: C - The critical illness policy, because it responds to several named conditions rather than one

Because Both are limited benefit products and neither replaces a medical plan, but they are not equally limited. A specified disease policy covers one disease; a critical illness policy covers a defined list. For a client who cannot predict which serious illness she will face, the list is worth more.

Where the other options lead

  • A.Trading breadth for depth when the client asked for breadth. A larger benefit for one disease still pays nothing for the others, and the client asked for the widest protection.
  • B.Misstating the critical illness trigger. A critical illness policy pays on diagnosis of a covered condition. Death is not the trigger.
  • D.Treating the two products as interchangeable. A specified disease policy responds to one named disease and nothing else. They are not interchangeable.
Q2 D Ch. 5: V. Types of policies (accident and health)

Answer: D - Accidental bodily injury looks only at the result, while accidental means requires the cause to be unintended too

Because Under accidental means a man who deliberately jumped from a wall and broke his ankle failed, because the act was intentional even though the injury was not. Accidental bodily injury is the broader and more modern wording and asks only whether the harm was unexpected.

Where the other options lead

  • A.Reversing the two standards. It is accidental means that inspects the cause. Accidental bodily injury asks only whether the injury was unexpected.
  • B.Reading one of the standards as extending to sickness. Neither standard covers sickness. Both are ways of deciding whether an injury was accidental.
  • C.Inventing a distinction based on the type of contract. The standards are wordings that have appeared in both markets. The difference is what has to be unintended.
Q3 C Ch. 1: I. Types of policies (life)

Answer: C - The healthier life can carry the underwriting, so the contract may still be issued

Because The insurer is not paying until both insureds have died, so an impairment on one life pushes the expected payment date forward far less than it would on an individual policy. Survivorship contracts are therefore often available where one spouse is uninsurable or heavily rated, which is one of the standard reasons for choosing the design.

Where the other options lead

  • A.Assuming the impairment is priced as it would be on a single life. The impairment matters less on a second-to-die contract, so the loading is far smaller than it would be on an individual policy.
  • B.Assuming an impaired life is dropped from the arrangement. Both lives remain insured. The point is that the impairment is weighed against the other life rather than being decisive on its own.
  • D.Assuming a survivorship contract is issued without underwriting. The contract is underwritten. What changes is that the risk is assessed across two lives rather than one.
