  1. Set a timer for 195 minutes and do not stop it. Running over is the commonest way a prepared candidate fails, and the only place you can find that out safely is here.
  2. Mark one answer for each question on the answer sheet.
  3. Answer every question. There is no penalty for a wrong answer. A blank is a guaranteed zero and a guess is not.
  4. Flag anything you are unsure of as you go. When you mark the paper, a question you flagged and got right is worth as much of your attention as one you got wrong - you do not yet know it, you guessed it.
  5. When the timer runs out, turn to the Answers section at the back of this file. Mark the paper against the quick-reference key first, fill in the score table, and only then read the worked explanations.

Pass mark vs pass rate

Each subtest of the General Knowledge Test is passed on its own against a scaled score of 200. The Florida Department of Education publishes what that is worth as a percentage of correct answers: 63% for English Language Skills, 70% for Reading, 63% for Mathematics. Those are maximums - a harder form of a subtest may require slightly fewer correct answers. The Essay is scored by two independent raters whose scores are added, and Rule 6A-4.0021 sets the passing total at 6. We teach the Essay in a chapter of its own and we do not mark essays: our questions and scores cover the three multiple-choice subtests. If you fail one subtest you retake only that subtest.

Worked explanations

The paper carries one for every question, at the back. These are the three above.

Q1 D Ch. 1: English Language Skills

Answer: D - A good field notebook is legible, dated and waterproof.

Because Items joined in a series must share a grammatical form. Three adjectives after one linking verb make the series parallel. Competencies s.82 ELS 1.2

Where the other options lead

  • A.Ends the series with a verb phrase. Two adjectives followed by a predicate is not a parallel series.
  • B.Mixes an adjective, a verb phrase and an adjective. The three elements take three different forms.
  • C.Mixes a noun and two adjectives. "Has legibility" does not match the adjectives that follow it.
Q2 C Ch. 1: English Language Skills

Answer: C - Classification

Because A classification passage divides a whole into its parts and takes each in turn. Here the water leaving the pond is divided into three routes. Competencies s.82 ELS 1.4

Where the other options lead

  • A.Reads a breakdown as a causal chain. The three routes are parts of one total, not consequences of one another.
  • B.Reads water loss as a difficulty being solved. No difficulty is stated and nothing is proposed.
  • D.Reads three categories as a comparison. The routes are listed as parts of a whole rather than weighed against each other.
Q3 C Ch. 1: English Language Skills

Answer: C - The results came back quickly, and the sample looked clean.

Because An adverb modifies a verb and an adjective follows a linking verb. "Looked" is a linking verb when it reports how something appears. Competencies s.82 ELS 3.8

Where the other options lead

  • A.Adverb after a linking verb. "Looked cleanly" would mean the sample did the looking.
  • B.Adjective modifying a verb. "Came back" takes the adverb "quickly".
  • D.Adjective for the verb and adverb after a linking verb. "Came back" is an action and takes an adverb; "looked" here describes the sample.
