  1. Set a timer for 195 minutes and do not stop it. Running over is the commonest way a prepared candidate fails, and the only place you can find that out safely is here.
  2. Mark one answer for each question on the answer sheet.
  3. Answer every question. There is no penalty for a wrong answer. A blank is a guaranteed zero and a guess is not.
  4. Flag anything you are unsure of as you go. When you mark the paper, a question you flagged and got right is worth as much of your attention as one you got wrong - you do not yet know it, you guessed it.
  5. When the timer runs out, turn to the Answers section at the back of this file. Mark the paper against the quick-reference key first, fill in the score table, and only then read the worked explanations.

Pass mark vs pass rate

Each subtest of the General Knowledge Test is passed on its own against a scaled score of 200. The Florida Department of Education publishes what that is worth as a percentage of correct answers: 63% for English Language Skills, 70% for Reading, 63% for Mathematics. Those are maximums - a harder form of a subtest may require slightly fewer correct answers. The Essay is scored by two independent raters whose scores are added, and Rule 6A-4.0021 sets the passing total at 6. We teach the Essay in a chapter of its own and we do not mark essays: our questions and scores cover the three multiple-choice subtests. If you fail one subtest you retake only that subtest.

  4. D7 kilograms

Worked explanations

The paper carries one for every question, at the back. These are the three above.

Q1 C Ch. 3: Mathematics

Answer: C - Large differences look smaller than they are

Because A tenfold gap then occupies the same height as the next tenfold gap, so large differences look smaller than they are.

Where the other options lead

  • A.Confuses the scale with the data. Every value can be plotted correctly on either scale.
  • B.Overstates the difficulty. A logarithmic scale is standard in several fields and is read routinely.
  • D.Reverses the effect of a logarithmic scale. A logarithmic scale compresses the upper end of the range.
Q2 C Ch. 1: English Language Skills

Answer: C - The site visit is scheduled for Tuesday, 14 April, at the north gate.

Because An appositive that renames what precedes it is enclosed in a pair of commas. Using only one comma of the pair is an error. Competencies s.82 ELS 3.11

Where the other options lead

  • A.Missing closing comma. One comma of a pair leaves the appositive unclosed.
  • B.Semicolons for an appositive. A semicolon joins independent clauses and does not enclose a date.
  • D.Missing comma after the day. The date is an appositive naming the day and takes commas on both sides.
Q3 D Ch. 3: Mathematics

Answer: D - 7 kilograms

Because The cement is one part, which is 7 kilograms.

Where the other options lead

  • A.Reads the ratio number as a quantity. A ratio has no units until it is applied to the total.
  • B.Divides the total by the cement figure. The total is divided by the sum of the parts, which is 5.
  • C.Gives the amount of sand. The cement is the second number in the ratio.
