  1. Set a timer for 195 minutes and do not stop it. Running over is the commonest way a prepared candidate fails, and the only place you can find that out safely is here.
  2. Mark one answer for each question on the answer sheet.
  3. Answer every question. There is no penalty for a wrong answer. A blank is a guaranteed zero and a guess is not.
  4. Flag anything you are unsure of as you go. When you mark the paper, a question you flagged and got right is worth as much of your attention as one you got wrong - you do not yet know it, you guessed it.
  5. When the timer runs out, turn to the Answers section at the back of this file. Mark the paper against the quick-reference key first, fill in the score table, and only then read the worked explanations.

Pass mark vs pass rate

Each subtest of the General Knowledge Test is passed on its own against a scaled score of 200. The Florida Department of Education publishes what that is worth as a percentage of correct answers: 63% for English Language Skills, 70% for Reading, 63% for Mathematics. Those are maximums - a harder form of a subtest may require slightly fewer correct answers. The Essay is scored by two independent raters whose scores are added, and Rule 6A-4.0021 sets the passing total at 6. We teach the Essay in a chapter of its own and we do not mark essays: our questions and scores cover the three multiple-choice subtests. If you fail one subtest you retake only that subtest.

Paper #1

95 questions. 195 minutes.

1

Four numbers are given: 1.4, 10/7, 1.43 and 3/2. Which lies between 1.4 and 3/2 on a number line?

  1. A10/7 and 1.43
  2. BNeither 10/7 nor 1.43
  3. C1.4 only
  4. D3/2 only
2

A batch is 4/9 of a tonne and 5/6 of a tonne is added. What is the total?

  1. A23/18
  2. B5/6
  3. C3/5
  4. D−7/18
3

Which expression is equivalent to 5(3x + 2) − 4x?

  1. A11x + 2
  2. B19x + 10
  3. C15x + 10 − 4
  4. D11x + 10

Worked explanations

The paper carries one for every question, at the back. These are the three above.

Q1 A Ch. 3: Mathematics

Answer: A - 10/7 and 1.43

Because Both 1.4286 and 1.4300 lie strictly between 1.4 and 1.5, so the answer is 10/7 and 1.43.

Where the other options lead

  • B.Assumes a fraction cannot fall between two decimals. 10/7 is 1.4286, which lies between 1.4 and 1.5.
  • C.Treats an endpoint as lying between the endpoints. 1.4 is one of the two boundaries, not a number between them.
  • D.Treats the other endpoint as lying between. 3/2 is the upper boundary.
Q2 A Ch. 3: Mathematics

Answer: A - 23/18

Because 8/18 + 15/18 = 23/18, so the total is 23/18 of a tonne.

Where the other options lead

  • B.Reports the amount added. The question asks for the total.
  • C.Adds numerators and denominators. Fractions are added over a common denominator.
  • D.Subtracts instead of adding. A second amount is added to the first.
Q3 D Ch. 3: Mathematics

Answer: D - 11x + 10

Because Subtracting 4x gives 15x − 4x + 10 = 11x + 10.

Where the other options lead

  • A.Multiplies only the first term inside the bracket. The 5 multiplies both terms, so 2 becomes 10.
  • B.Adds the 4x instead of subtracting it. The expression subtracts 4x, so 15x − 4x = 11x.
  • C.Treats 4x as the number 4. The 4x is a term in x and combines with the 15x.
